My great grandparents immigrated to the United States for a
number of reasons. However, their decision to move to the United States
was not a rare one. Many Italians immigrated to the United States
during the 1800's. In fact as many as 300,000 immigrants came to the
United States through Ellis Island in the late 1880's. This
number more than doubled in the 1890's when as many as 600,000 Italian
immigrants came to the United States. During the 20th century
specifically between the years 1901-1910 over two million Italians had
immigrated into the United States. By 1920 over 4 million Italians had
immigrated into the United States and they composed over 10 percent of
the United States foreign population.
