Last updated
on Dec. 12, 2012
Based from The
WebQuest Page
This lesson will teach poetry through a historical perspective. It will compare different styles of poetry at different points in time. It will begin with Shakespeare and culminate with Rap. This lesson was developed as part of an in-class assignment for the MAT Program at SIUE.
Students should be able to recognize the sound of a poem when they hear it. This lesson can easily be extended to additional grades.
The students should have
basic reading,
comprehension and writing skills.
The
students will learn about the different forms of poetry and
the different time
periods that they were created.
We will
talk about how poetry influenced culture and culture
influenced poetry.
Common
Core Reading Standard
9-10th
grade
Determine the meaning of
words and phrases
as they are used in the text, including figurative and
connotative meanings;
analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on
meaning and tone
(e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how
it sets a formal
or informal tone.
This lesson will be taught in
a unit (five
days), with students learning about a different era of poetry
and the main
poets in it each day. Time periods will include Elizabethan,
Romance and
Transcendentalism, Realism, Modern poetry and The Beats. The
class will read
and then recite the poems from each era and compare them at
the end of the
week. On their own, students will use the Webquest to learn
more about each
era. The will choose a favorite song, preferably a rap song,
and compare it to
one of the eras.
This lesson can be taught as
a Multidisciplinary
lesson because it will teach History and English.
The teacher should be
well-versed in
traditional and modern poetry.
Variations
This
activity is
great for students who are auditory learners. They can listen
to the poetry and
kinesthetic learners can also act it out. The lesson is also
well-suited for
visual learners who enjoy
conducting research
and learning through reading.
Materials
Needed
VIDEO
LINKS AND AUDIO OF POETS RECITING THEIR POETRY.
COMPUTERS,
SMARTBOARDS, AUDIO-SETS, INTERNET AND SMART PHONES CAN BE USED
TO ACCESS POETRY
AND/OR ARTISTS.
The lesson’s success is based
on how well
students score on a rubric when asked to identify poetry from
different eras
and compare modern rap songs to these eras. Teachers can also
ask students to
present their short papers to their peers and assess how well
students can
explain what they have learned.
The students will gain a
greater appreciation
of poetry through expression (verbal, written and oral) and
see poetry through
a historical perspective.
