Scholarly vs. Popular: What's the Difference?

Your instructor has assigned a research assignment that requires you to use only scholarly journal articles in your research. What are scholarly journal articles and why are you supposed to use these instead of web sites like you usually do?

There are several differences between scholarly journal articles and popular magazine articles. Use the table below to locate the differences between the two.

Scholarly Journals Popular Magazines
Have very long articles, sometimes 20 pages or more Usually have shorter articles
Are written by experts in the field, usually researchers/scholars reporting on their own research Written by staff reporters
Rarely have images; sometimes have charts or graphs Use glossy, full-color images
Usually include a list of references, or works cited Rarely include references or works cited

Still confused? Watch this tutorial on how to tell the difference between scholarly and popular publications and why you should use them in your research.
