My Interests

Between balancing school, work, and a social life, I do have some interests that I like to engage in when I get the chance. Since I’ve started college, it’s been harder to find any extra time for myself. But when I do get that chance, there are a few things that I always love to come back to. Out of several small interests and hobbies I have, I'll break them down into three main categories – Film, Music, and Design.

Movies / TV Shows:

One of my top interests would have to be film. Since I was young, I’ve always enjoyed movie nights with my family and friends, as well as collecting DVDs and VHS tapes. I started out with classic early 2000’s movie such as the Harry Potter series, and various Disney movies. I’ve always had a liking for movies with cool visual effects. The mid-2000s was when the film industry dabbled into CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). This made movies a lot more captivating and able to tell the story better.

Since I’ve grown up and streaming services became available, my love for film has followed and intensified. On those nights that I decide to stay in, my favorite way to unwind is wrapping up into bed and turning on a good movie or TV show. The TV shows I’m most invested in are Stranger Things, Shameless, and That 70s Show. Usually when I get invested in a show or movie, you might catch me re-watching them from time to time. Most people would probably think that’s boring, but I find it a little intriguing. I feel like I can understand and appreciate the storyline the more I go back and re-watch.

Another aspect of my life that made me appreciate film is when I took a video and audio production class at SIUE’s Mass Communications program. Learning the basics of what goes on into a set really fascinated me. From sound effects to camera angles, it really put into perspective what goes on in the film world. Now, every time I watch my favorite shows or movies, I can’t help but think about how much work is put in and have a better appreciation for the effort and attention to detail.

Some Cool Tunes:

Another major interest of mine is music. Like I mentioned in my ‘About Me’, I grew up listening to all types of music.

One of my top genres is classic rock. This is a type of music I never thought I’d actually get into until high school. My favorite decades range from the '60’s-'80’s. These are decades that my parents and grandparents lived through, so that was the type of music I was exposed to on the daily. From listening to their music in the car and around the house, I guess I drew a liking for it once I got older. I think it’s cool to listen to music from other times. When I was 15, I decided to compile an 'old music' playlist on Spotify to put my favorite songs in one place.

I also love music this current generation. I think artists have become more and more creative over time. There are artists who deliver a modern yet unique sound, like Harry Styles, Kanye West, and Billie Eilish. There are other artists who have an older feel, like Tame Impala and Greta Van Fleet.

A Dabble in Design:

As you may have read before, I’m pretty big into marketing. Any opportunity to be creative, I’m all in. Although writing is a major love and talent of mine, nothing quite satisfies me more than a good design project.

When I joined the SIUE’s Marketing Association, designing flyers was one of my main responsibilities. I’ve made several flyers for speaker events and recruitment purposes. Canva is my favorite platform to make creations because of its easy usage and countless types of projects to create. I love to experiment with various colors, fonts, and elements. It’s one of my favorite hobbies and I’m glad I chose a career where it can be incorporated into various marketing projects. Once my life slows down, I plan on looking into an Adobe Certification. I’d like to learn more about photoshop and design.
