Featured Organizations

This month's featured organizations benefit three different types of cancers. They are: Susan G. Komen, ThyCa, and The Colon Cancer Alliance.

Susan G. Komen benefits breast cancer research and awareness, and has a unique story surrounding it. Susan G. Komen was from Peoria, IL (my hometown) and battled breast cancer for three long years before losing her battle against the disease. Her sister, Nan, was by her side as much as possible during her battle. After spending time in many hospitals together, the sisters decided that something had to be done to improve research and the quality of life for breast cancer patients. Although Susan never got to see this come to fruition, Nan powered through, with her sisters spirit serving as inspiration and created Susan G. Komen. A link to merchandise benefitting Susan G. ThyCa benefits thyroid cancer research and awareness, and stands for Thyroid Cancer Survivor's Association. Although it says survivor in the title, ThyCa benefit thyroid cancer patients around the world, no matter what stage they are in. It is called this because it is ran by survivors of the disease who want to increase research and awareness. ThyCa has only been around 20 years, but they provide so much of the support for thyroid cancer patients that you see in hospitals around the country. The Colon Cancer Alliance benefits colon cancer research and awareness, and is the youngest of our featured charities. At only 15 years old, The Colon Cancer Alliance started as a simple online support group for colon cancer patients and has now become a worldwide movement for support, awareness and research for this increasingly common form of cancer. After their innaugural meeting in Washington, D.C. in 1999, the group quickly grew, including in sponsors such as The Bayer Group, who help the organization host fundraising events to benefit the research and awareness of this disease.
