Faculty Development Workshop, April 1

You're invited to attend the "Sharing Critical Thinking Assessment Data and Ideas for Improving Students’ Critical Thinking Skills" workshop.

9-10:30 a.m.
Friday, April 1
Morris University Center, Mississippi-Illinois Room

The General Education Assessment Committee was given the charge of assessing the goals of general education and our baccalaureate degree. Several of these goals (e.g. written communication, scientific literacy, analytic problem solving) are essential elements to critical thinking ability.

Thus, we wish to share our critical thinking assessment data with interested parties, identify potentially key skills upon which we need to focus, share concrete ideas for increasing critical thinking in the classroom and have the attendees share their own ideas for improvement techniques. This will include a presentation of the committee’s history, goals and results, followed by a panel discussion of effective techniques to increase students’ willingness to engage in critical thinking in the classroom. Finally, there will be a chance for attendees to share their own experiences and ideas with one another.

Panelists: Richard Fry (philosophy), Joel Hardman (English), Faith Liebl (biological sciences), and Thad Meeks (psychology)

SIUE to Host Regional Jazz Festival, April 1

Friday, April 1
Dunham Hall

High school jazz ensembles from Illinois, Missouri and Michigan will swing their way onto campus to participate in a day of performances and workshops. Co-produced by New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, the regional festival is a non-competitive, education-focused festival designed to offer high school jazz bands of all levels the opportunity to perform the music of Duke Ellington and other seminal big band composers and arrangers.

The event is made possible through a grant from The St. Louis Jazz Club, whose primary goal is to support live traditional jazz performance and broaden the understanding of the music.

The concluding concert is open to the public and will feature participating bands, clinicians and the SIUE Concert Jazz Band. General admission is $12, and $9 for seniors and those under 18. SIUE students may attend for free with valid student ID.

School of Pharmacy Offers Free Medication Evaluation Visits

Chris Lynch, professor and director of clinical programs in the SIUE School of Pharmacy, invites faculty, staff or their friends and family to sign up for a free medication evaluation visit.

Lynch, and two senior pharmacy students, will visit the patient in their home or meet with them in Lynch's office in the School of Pharmacy. Lynch can travel anywhere within a 40-mile radius of the campus. He and his students will conduct a thorough interview, review all medications and offer written feedback to the patient and his or her caregivers as needed.

This program is especially beneficial to those taking large numbers of medications each day or who have medicated-related problems. Lynch is a board certified ambulatory care clinical pharmacist with 23 years experience specializing in assisting patients dealing with large numbers of medications.

Please contact Lynch at jaylynch@siue.edu or 650-5139 by Friday, April 8 for appointments between April 11 and April 22. Contact him by Monday, May 16 for appointments between May 22 and June 10.

Undergraduate Scholars Showcase, April 28

It’s time again for the SIUE Undergraduate Scholars Showcase. You are invited to learn about the outstanding work SIUE’s undergraduates have accomplished in their major programs.

2-4 p.m., with a reception following
Thursday, April 28
Morris University Center

The Undergraduate Scholars Showcase is our annual opportunity to highlight the depth and variety of learning experiences offered by SIUE’s Senior Assignment program and the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) program.

Each academic unit demonstrates the best of what the University's undergraduates have mastered. Each department and program nominates two outstanding Senior Assignment projects to be presented at the Undergraduate Scholars Showcase. In keeping with the spirit of last year’s event, URCA Associates and Assistants will be displaying their presentations as well.

Each participant will receive a certificate of achievement and will be honored at a closing reception. This growing event allows students, faculty and community members an opportunity to celebrate learning and our students’ accomplishments.
