Chancellor's Report on the SIUE Congress Today

SIUE Interim Chancellor Stephen Hansen will present his report to the University community on the results of the SIUE congress:

10 a.m.
Today
Morris University Center Meridian Ballroom

"As you are well aware, the University is at a critical juncture where resources, growth, and program expansion all dictate different courses of action," said Hansen. "I hope you will be able to join us when I present the Action Plans developed by the SIUE congress. These plans are important for the University, as they provide us with a way forward for this year and next."

Enrollment Picture Promising, Registration Opens Today

Registration for both summer and fall 2016 terms begins today. With several months to go before summer and fall census, the enrollment picture is promising for both summer and fall as of this week.

Due to the record spring enrollment and strong retention trends, 600 more continuing students are eligible to register for upcoming terms compared to this time last year.

In addition, new student applications for summer term are up five percent for freshmen, 10 percent for transfers and 42 percent for international students. Graduate program admits are up two percent for summer.

Although it is still early, deposits for the new freshman Springboard Registration program are at a record high and two percent above last year.

Thirty-four percent more graduate students have been admitted for fall term compared to this time last spring. The fall term admit rates for new international and transfer students are nearly identical to this time frame last year.

Additional information regarding fall applications, Springboard deposits and housing deposits can be tracked on the Enrollment Management website.

Nomination Deadline for Employee Recognition Program, March 16

The Employee Recognition Program Award is an esteemed accolade bestowed on an employee who epitomizes the University’s core values in his/her daily work. The employee is engaged in accomplishing the mission of the University and routinely exceeds the call of duty. Do you work alongside someone who has a strong commitment toward achieving excellence in their work?

Why not nominate them for the Employee Recognition Program award? The program is designed to recognize civil service and professional staff employees for their exceptional accomplishments and service to our community. Employees may be nominated for this prestigious award by faculty, staff or students. The nomination must be made or supported by the immediate supervisor.

More information regarding rewards, nomination criteria and the nomination form can be obtained Employee Recognition.

Nominations are due in the Office of Human Resources by close of business Wednesday, March 16 to be eligible for the April award.

Since employees may receive the award only once, please contact Maria Marmolejo at 650-2127 before submitting a nomination.

Continuous Improvement Conference: General Education Course Redesign for Success

9 a.m.-Noon

SIUE has successfully remained afloat, even growing, despite the Illinois state funding crisis. However, continued challenges threaten our mission of “a student-centered educational community dedicated to communicating, expanding and integrating knowledge.”

Join together with staff, faculty and administrators to see where we are on the map, and how we can navigate the crisis together. Instructors will share course redesign efforts they have already undertaken.

We will discuss an institutional plan for undertaking course redesign projects. Participants will discuss course redesign and how we might work together to improve student success. More details to follow.

The conference is designed for administrators, faculty (tenured, tenure track, instructors and lecturers) and staff.

It is co-sponsored by the Faculty Development Council and the Office of the Provost.

To register and for more information, visit here.

Volunteer Judges Needed for Science and Engineering Research Challenge, April 2

Volunteer judges are needed for the Regional Science and Engineering Research Challenge (SERC) at SIUE.

8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Saturday, April 2
SIUE Student Fitness Center – Student Activity Center

More than 250 regional students from grades 5-12 participate in the SERC. Projects take advantage of a child's natural curiosity, stimulate the imagination and encourage independent critical thinking, all while enabling students to understand that science is an integral part of life. The competition helps students advance their thinking, confidence and interest in STEM.

To be successful, the SERC requires more than 200 judges. Experience in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) is preferred, but not required. Judges training, a continental breakfast and light lunch will be provided on the day of the event.

Click here to register as a volunteer judge!

For more information, please contact STEM Resource Center Manager Colin Wilson at colwils@siue.edu or 650-3500.

GAME DAY: TEAM SIUE, April 13

The Chancellor’s Council is pleased to invite you to a celebration in YOUR honor!

Please join us for GAME DAY: TEAM SIUE

11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Wednesday, April 13

Morris University Center’s Meridian Ballroom and on its adjoining patio

There will be games and laughter as we celebrate the end of another successful school year. We’ve also put in an order for sunshine!

Please bring your Cougar ID Card in order to enter into the grand prize drawing. During the week of April 4-9, the Morris University Center Cougar Store will be offering 20% off Cougar clothing that is not already on sale. Present your University ID to take advantage of the deal! Please feel free to wear your SIUE apparel to the event along with your nametag.

Since this year’s theme is GAME DAY: TEAM SIUE, there will be a ballpark menu— brats, black bean burgers, watermelon, pretzel bites and more —along with a number of games and activities.

Campus departments have donated great prizes for a random drawing distribution. These will be on display at the lunch, and will be distributed following the event. You do not need to be present to win.

This year’s festivities will, again, include a photo montage of our departments, available for viewing during the reception. Your help in providing a photo for inclusion in the montage would be appreciated! Please submit photos to Dan Frierdich at dfrierd@siue.edu by April 1. Pictures can be from departmental events during the past year, or feel free to come up with something new and creative.

For those supervisors with employees who have limited access to email, please pass this information along to them so they can join us, or call ext. 2475 to request a flyer for posting.

Free parking will be available in Lot B from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

We hope you’ll take advantage of this opportunity to visit with us and with your colleagues in a fun, relaxed atmosphere as we celebrate all you do for SIUE.

Thank you!
Steve Hansen, Denise Cobb, Kenn Neher, Rachel Stack and Jeffrey Waple
