Development Opportunities
To build awareness and competencies needed to foster cultural humility and in order to advance anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusive excellence and social justice at SIUE, the IMPACT Center must provide a variety of ways for faculty, staff, students, and community members to interact and engage with necessary tools and resources for development. The IMPACT Center has established three dimensions of development for individuals and groups: Trainings and workshops, a Pathway Program, and the opportunity to individually complete a train-the-trainer program to become an IMPACT Center trainer.
Training and Workshops
Training is a process through which individuals or groups acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies to improve their performance in a specific area or to meet specific goals. They can include a variety of methods such as lectures, case studies, role plays, simulations, self assessments with coaching, worksheets, online modules, etc. Workshops are a specific type of training that is structured and interactive; often designed with activities, discussions, or hands-on learning. Often a workshop is designed to either focus on learning a single specific skill, foster creativity, build professional development through competency improvement or even focus on team-building by encouraging collaboration and communication among team members. IMPACT training and workshops are designed to meet the objective of the IMPACT Center while tailoring the method and skill development to the needs of the audience.

A pathway program is an educational or training initiative designed to help individuals or teams transition from one stage of learning or a career to another. Often this is done through a provided structured route to help participants develop the needed skills, qualifications, or knowledge needed to achieve their goals. The IMPACT Center offers three pathway programs for learning and professional development for one’s career; one for faculty, one for staff, and one for community members. The pathways are designed to meet the IMPACT center objective while providing specific skill development which results in certification that can be carried throughout one’s career. Students have a pathway program called the Leading for Antiracism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leadership Certificate (ADEI Leadership Certificate). The certificate is specifically designed by the SIU System and completed through the Kimmel Belonging and Engagement Hub.

A train-the-trainer training program effectively equips trainers with the tools needed to deliver training programs, workshops, or even courses effectively. It is designed to not only focus on the actual subject matter or content, but also on the techniques and teaching methods, communication skills and strategies for engaging learners or audience members. Key components of the program include: instructional design, facilitation skills, presentation skills, assessment and evaluation, adult learning principles/student development principles.
