Maximum Loan Limits

Below are the loan limits for students per federal regulations:

Lifetime Loan Limits (Subsidized and Unsubsidized):

  • Dependent - $31,000 lifetime. Max of $23,000 Subsidized.
  • Independent - $57,500 lifetime. Max of $23,000 Subsidized.
  • Graduate - $100,000 (unsubsidized) 
  • Overall Lifetime Cap: $257,500 for all federal loans combined (except Parent PLUS)

Annual Maximum Loan Limits:

Dependent Students Maximum Annual Amount:

  • Freshman - $5,500 - No more than $3,500 can be Subsidized
  • Sophomore - $6,500 - No more than $4,500 can be Subsidized
  • Junior/Senior - $7,500 - No more than $5,500 can be Subsidized
  • Parent PLUS Lifetime Cap: $65,000 per dependent student

*Students with a Denied PLUS loan may be eligible for additional unsubsidized loan.

Independent Students Maximum Annual Amount:

  • Freshman - $9,500 - No more than $3,500 can be Subsidized
  • Sophomore - $10,500 - No more than $4,500 can be Subsidized
  • Junior/Senior - $12,500 - No more than $5,500 can be Subsidized

Graduate Students Maximum Annual Amount:

  • Graduate - $20,500 - Unsubsidized
  • Pharmacy - $33,000 - Unsubsidized

Professional Student (Pharmacy/Dental)

  • Lifetime Cap: $200,000 ($50,000 per year)
