Posted July 25, 2018
On Tuesday, July 24th, 40 high school students from 21 different states nationwide along with 8 mentors from SAFB and industry visited SIUE School of Engineering to take a tour of the Wind Tunnel in the Aerodynamics and Energy Lab. The program started with welcoming speeches of Dr. Serdar Celik, Dean Cem Karacal, and Dr. Chris Gordon. Dr. Anne Werner, Department Chair of Construction Department; and Dr. Ryan Fries, Department Chair of Civil Engineering Department briefed the guests about the Construction and Civil Engineering programs offered at SIUE. The program continued with Dr. Celik’s lecture on wind tunnel and pitot tube principles which was followed by the tour of the Aerodynamics and Energy Lab and a demo of the Wind Tunnel. Students were able to observe air flow around objects in the wind tunnel.
After the wind tunnel demonstration, the students and the mentors visited the MEMS and Mechatronics Labs where Drs. Kamran Shavezipur and Nima Lotfi informed the guests about their research at SIUE. According to the feedback from the mentors, their visit left a very positive impression about engineering applications on the students. The STEM Camp is organized by a partnership of Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) will add Scott Air Force Base (SAFB). SAME is a profession engineering society with a 97 year history, dedicated to resolving National Security challenges. With over 25,000 members, and 105 Posts at locations across the US and around the world, SAME members come from all Department of Defense (DoD) services, other Government agencies and the private sector.
