Electrical Engineering Professor Wins Best Paper Award
Jen-Shiun Chen, a Professor in the electrical and computer engineering department, won the best paper award at the 4th International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Technologies & Applications (ICUT 2009.) The Conference was held in Fukuoka, Japan from December 20 - 22, 2009. Dr. Chen's paper was entitled, ""Efficient Performance Analysis of Band-Limited Slotted CDMA Wireless Packet Networks." According to Dr. Chen, "To describe the operations of this type of networks, complex mathematical and stochastic models have to be used. The complex models make accurate performance analysis of such networks challenging and time-consuming. In the paper, an efficient method was presented that allows for simple and accurate performance evaluation of such networks."
Ph.D Student Wins Prestigious Scholarship
Jiguang Zhao, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil Engineering, won the Illinois section Institute of Transportation Engineers (IL ITE) 2009 Scholarship. This scholarship is the highest student award from IL ITE. Jiguang was selected among many qualified candidates from the University of Illinois (Urbana and Chicago campuses), Illinois Institute of Technology, Northwestern University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He was selected for the $2,000 award at a banquet held on January 22 in Niles, IL on the basis of academic performance, education plans, career goals, activities, and record of leadership. Zhao is among the first group of doctoral students recruited by the SIUE Department of Civil Engineering after the School of Engineering started the Cooperative PhD program with SIU Carbondale in Spring 2008. His major is transportation engineering and his advisor is Dr. Huaguo Zhou.
