Job Description/Responsibilities
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Department of Social Work is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, non-tenure-track instructor and Practicum Education Program Coordinator position. Candidate duties will involve both teaching and practicum program coordination.
In respect to teaching
Duties will involve teaching across the curriculum - both undergraduate and graduate core, accreditation required courses, including but not limited to, practicum seminar courses. Teaching social work electives or other non-social work university courses, as opportunities and need arises. The candidate's teaching assignments and requirements will align to the social work department's accrediting body (CSWE - Council on Social Work Education) mandates. This includes CSWE required appropriate course releases for practicum program administration.
In respect to practicum program coordination
Duties will involve coordination and administration of the department's undergraduate and graduate practicum program. This will entail implementing all components, including but not limited to:
- Identifying student placement opportunities, securing affiliation agreements, cultivating relationships, and developing/maintaining positive partnerships with prospective placement sites to broaden their relationships with the university, college, department, and students;
- Recruiting/vetting practicum supervisors who work with the students at practicum sites;
- Working in conjunction with department leadership to monitor, develop, and evaluate the practicum program policies, procedures, seminar course content and curriculum; Contributing to departmental administration, curriculum development and governance;
- Training/Supporting faculty practicum seminar instructors and monitoring seminar course enhancements and delivery;
- Facilitating/Monitoring student placement to ensure educational quality and monitoring site visits;
- Designing/Delivering practicum orientations to students, faculty, staff, practicum site, practicum supervisors and other constituent groups;
- Working in conjunction with Department Chair to oversee practicum records management - Maintaining all practicum program databases, manuals, forms and other related documentation;
- Representing the practicum program at all department, college, university, accreditation, and/or professional meetings (participating on related commitees);
- Serving as a department representative on the Department Social Work CEU committee, which provides training and educational outreach for sites, practicum supervisors, and students;
- Working with the Department Chair and Program Directors to update, and enhance the practicum seminar structure, syllabi, and course content so that it aligns to accreditation requirements and professional program curriculum standards;
- Assisting with department student recruitment, orientation, and retentions efforts to make sure information about practicum readiness, program matriculation and success is aptly delivered;
- Mediating placement conflicts and leading efforts to address student and/or site concerns; As needed monitor student academic progress as it affects placement and/or placement progress and work the Department and College to identify appropriate next steps in the event of practicum termination, dismissal, or early exits; Maintaining positive relationship with and facilitating and/or attending meetings with necessary University student support units or administrative persons to support student practicum success;
- Advising students on issues related to the practicum program and/or career transition;
- Actively engage with practicum program coordinators/directors at other accredited programs via participation in constituent groups, networking events, meeting, and/or conferences;
- Providing monthly, semester, and annual reports on practicum program developments and outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
- MSW (Masters Social Work) degree from a CSWE-accredited program;• 2 years post MSW experience teaching college courses in an accredited social work program
- One-year experience as a social work student practicum supervisor;
- Prior experience teaching practicum seminar courses at a CSWE accredited social work program,
- Proficiency with Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel) and the Blackboard Management LMS System
- Comfort with public speaking and Excellent communication (oral and written) skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching other (non-practicum) BSW or MSW courses at a CSWE accredited social work program and teaching using a variety of modalities (e.g., on campus, hybrid, and online);
- Experience as a practicum program director, coordinator and/or liaison for an accredited social work program;
- Experience as a program leader, director, or manager in higher ed, non-profit, or human service agency;
- Experience with program monitoring, evaluation, records management, and data analysis
- Experience with the CSWE accreditation process
Terms of Appointment
Full-time, non-tenure track, 9-month appointment for academic year 23/24
