The History and Development of Art
The study of art history examines specific works of art and architecture both as expressions of human creativity and as uniquely informative historical documents. Through such investigations, students gain a greater aesthetic appreciation of art and a deeper understanding of its purposes in different times and places. Understanding the historical development of art also contributes significantly to a student's comprehension of the overall development of human culture through the ages.
The Department of Art and Design offers both a bachelor's in art history as well as a minor. Art history is an essential part of the curriculum of all undergraduate art programs at SIUE, including art studio and art education, and also serves the graduate program in art studio. There are two full time art history professors in the department, covering historical periods ranging from prehistory to contemporary art.
