Scholarships, Internships & Research Opportunities
Scholarships
Scholarships for students from underrepresented backgrounds, including Native American students, are available. For more information, see the Johnetta Haley Scholarship. Native American students interested in teaching may also apply for the Minority Teachers Scholarship Program.
The Steven Hanlin Memorial Scholarship
Steven Hanlin completed the SIUE archaeology field school at Gehring in 2013, and loved it so much he returned to do it again in 2014. Steven completed his BS in Anthropology at SIUE in 2015.
A scholarship in Steven’s name has been created to help students who would otherwise have trouble affording to take field school. In the summer of 2024, the first recipient of this scholarship will receive funding to pay for 6 credits of tuition to take ANTH 475. Priority will be given to Anthropology majors with demonstrated financial. Particular preference will be given to descendant populations (Native American students) and other underserved student populations.
For more information or to apply for this scholarship, email SIUE Anthropology Chair, Dr. Julie Zimmermann, at julzimm@siue.edu.
Museum Internships and Research Opportunities
Faculty members in this program have a wide variety of research projects in which students can receive hands-on experience in methodologies for studying Native American topics. These projects include activities such as working with archival documents, conducting fieldwork in contemporary Native communities, learning to use high-tech sound and video equipment, handling and analyzing museum artifacts, and processing artifacts found at an archaeological excavation. Students in this program may qualify for museum internships and/or Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) Fellowships under Native American studies faculty mentorship.
