Mission
The Department of Mass Communications at SIUE is committed to free expression and providing students with opportunities to meaningfully engage with the world around them through liberal arts education and professional skills development. We foster creative, critical and independent thinking. We teach our students to tell compelling stories about people and communities that are fair, truthful, and accurate. We encourage students to be self-directed and entrepreneurial in an evolving media landscape. Students learn diverse perspectives, ethical practices, and a respect for democratic principles that guide media industries.

Department Overview
The Department of Mass Communications prepares students for careers across the media landscape — from journalism and strategic communications to video production and digital media. Our three professional tracks let students specialize while building a shared foundation in writing, ethics, critical thinking, and media law.
Located in Dunham Hall on the Edwardsville campus, the department offers state-of-the-art facilities including a television studio, audio production labs, a multimedia lab, and professional field equipment. Students gain hands-on experience through student-run media outlets, internships, and the Film and TV Workforce Training Program.
Our graduates work at organizations including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, ESPN, CBS, Anheuser-Busch, and Fleishman-Hillard. The department holds ACEJMC accreditation — a distinction earned by fewer than a quarter of journalism and mass communication programs nationwide — and was most recently re-accredited in 2024.
