Have you ever taken an online course that absolutely bored you to death? Were you furiously trying to keep up while the instructor was rushing through bullet points? Maybe you were doodling, or you fell asleep because the course dragged on and on."

In this section, we will discuss ways to keep your learner engaged in your topic.

Discovery Learning

Discovery learning is an inquiry-based, constructivist learning theory that occurs in problem-solving situations. The learner is encouraged to fall back on his or her own past experiences and current knowledge to discover facts and relationships to be learned. Students interact with the instructor, each other, the content, and themselves by exploration, observation, problem-solving, simulations, case studies or performing experiments. As a result, learners may be more more likely to learn facts, concepts, relationships, solutions, and knowledge discovered on their own. Discovery learning makes it difficult for your learner not to participate in your online instruction. Why? Because discovery learning is not a student passively receiving instruction, rather they are actively participating in the learning process.
