Food

We all have to eat to survive. But what we choose to eat and how to grow and kill our food has great ramifications on the environment, as well as workers and animal welfare. Below you will find sites that will help you discover more information about the food industry, as well as places where you can go to make a difference.

Local Harvest
Local Harvest provides information about where you can buy local, organic produce and meat (as well as other goods) near your town.

Large Food Production
There is so much popular culture currently documenting large food prodution: the movies, Food Inc. and Fast Food Nation show how workers and animals are treated; Jamie Oliver, the "food revolution" television chef, has done a great job trying to show the impact of fast food on human health; and authors like Michael Pollan and Jonathan Safron Foer have helped us understand the political nature of food consumption.

Animal Welfare: If you are unaware of how large corporations raise and kill your meat. Please watch: Meet your Meat

Fish Facts: If you are unsure which fish to avoid because of over-fishing or health concerns, check out this place.

Human Rights: The following is an interesting report about how workers are treated in the food industry: Blood, Sweat and Fear

Environmental Impact: United Nations reports that 18% of global warming is caused by livestock: Livestock's Long Shadow
