1. CU Reese introducing topic [:34] 1. Hey guys! On today’s show we’re going to be talking about the 67th Emmy Awards. Now, I know it’s just a show about people winning awards, but there was a particular award won by a particular woman. That was a big deal. Viola Davis won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Now, that has never happened in all its 67 years that has never happened for a woman of color. So yes this was a very important moment. Here’s her acceptance speech.
2. FADEUP: clip of award winner being introduced [:13] 2. Announcer: The Emmy goes to…Viola Davis How To Get Away With Murder.
3. CU Reese speaking on facial expressions [:36] 3. Now lets just freeze it right there. Look down those six blocks, and look at all those faces. Now, first block is Taraji P. Henson. She didn’t win, but she looked a little bit more excited than Viola did. Viola looked more surprised (mumbling). Look at the lady at the last block, she doesn’t look very happy. (Laughing) Alright lets continue.
4. CUT TO: clip Viola accepting award [:24] 4. Announcer: How To Get Away With Murder. Lady: This is the first Emmy win and nomination for Viola Davis, who is a graduate of Juliard. (Cheering)
5. CUT TO: CU Reese speaking on women cheering [:17] 5. Do you realize in that whole crowd you can hear two women screaming?? Now you may not know those voices, but I do. That’s Taraji P. Henson and Kerry Washington screaming in joy for Viola, that she won this award. Continue.
6. CUT TO: Viola’s speech [1:43] 6. (Cheering) “In my mind I see a line. And over that line I see green fields, and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. But I can’t seem to get there no how. I can’t seem to get over that line.” That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s. And let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. (Cheering) You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. So here’s to all the writers, the awesome people that have been (forward?) Paul Lee, Peter Nowalk, Shonda Rhimes. People who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be BLACK! And to the Taraji P. Hensons, the Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Baharis, the Megan Goods, to Gabrielle Union thank you for taking us over that line.
7. CUT TO: CU Reese closing [1:27] 7. I personally think that whole speech deserved a standing ovation, but that’s just my opinion. But I loved how they kept showing Taraji’s face and Kerry Washingotn’s face because you all the all the joy all the happiness that they had for Viola. Like there was no no jealousy, no envy nothing in their face, nothing but joy. Because they know how important this award was for Viola for women of color period because we don’t win. I’m not just talking about Black people, I’m talking women of color. We don’t win. We’re always a supporting actress, or a little a little role but we are never the lead. For her to be able to win that, that’s just another milestone that she has broken down for women of color. And I appreciate that, that is inspiring, that is motivational especially for me because I’ve seen everything she has been in. Everything. Growing up I’ve seen every “black” movie and she has always been wonderful. And for her to be able to get what she finally deserves, I… I applaud that.
