Area Hot Spots
Southern Illinois University is
known for its gorgeous wooded campus, but at night and when the weather is bad it
is important to have a back up plan. These “Area Hot Spots” are examples of
good places in the area that an SIUE student should at least visit one time. There
are too many area locations to be covered on this site, so these are just some
ideas.
The City Museum is located on 701 N. 15th
Street in St. Louis. Don’t be scared off by the name, this is no museum or at
least not one that is like anything you have ever seen. No one sentence can capture the essence of
the City Museum. It has been described as “A McDonald’s Play Place that adults
can enjoy” by an SIUE student (Ziebka). A motto of the City Museum is “COME
EXPLORE”, this is a very accurate slogan because of the laid back no set path
attitude that can be seen throughout your self- guided tour (Come Explore City Museum).
The exploring includes caves, shafts, indoor and outdoor tubes, slides, and
even an aquarium. There is no one set path to your exploring. The costs vary
but are somewhere between 10 and 15 dollars per person (City Museum). The City
Museum even has extended hours on weekends that can go as late as 1 am. More
information can be found at the City Museum website http://www.citymuseum.org/.
City Museum’s
Outdoor exhibit Monstro City
This is one of our nation’s greatest zoos and it is less than 30 minutes for the Edwardsville campus. With over 5000 animals on the zoo’s 90 acres and free admission to a majority of the attractions the zoo is an ideal place to spend the afternoon. The zoo is open year round. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the zoo is open from 8am to 7pm and during the non-peak season is open from 9am to 5 pm (St. Louis Zoo). More information can be found at http://www.stlzoo.org/.

Wild Country is a family owned club located 15 minutes from the SIUE campus in Collinsville, Illinois just off of highway 157. Wild Country is a bar/dance club that consists of about 60 percent country music and 40 percent all other genres (Wild Country). Whether you are a cowboy or a city boy, its fun to get dressed up in boots and a belt buckle and just hang out. There are always nightly contests, live bands, and or DJ’s. This is a good Thursday or Friday night activity year round. Security is very strict about underage drinking, so it is probably not the place to drink if you are under 21.
