Counseling Services' Mindfulness and Meditation Series Concludes Today

Join us for this fall's final session to learn ways to practice everyday mindfulness and meditation.

Yoga concepts and stretching will be explored with Amanda Couch and Estelle Gyimah, both of Campus Recreation. Feel free to bring a yoga mat, if you desire.

Plan to Attend Today's Kevin Johnson Memorial Lecture

The inaugural Kevin Johnson Memorial Lecture will feature renowned environmental chemist Dr. Jorge Gardea-Torresdey who will talk on “From Gold Phytomining to the Fate of Nanoparticles in Terrestrial Plants: Synchrotron-based Studies.”

The Kevin Johnson Memorial Lecture is free and open to the public.

A special meeting is also planned for alumni of both chemistry and environmental sciences.

The SIUE STEM and IRIS Centers invite SIUE and surrounding community members to attend the Digital East St. Louis project showcase.

East St. Louis middle school students who have been involved in the program will showcase the websites and other digital humanities products they have produced during the past three years.

Some of the students’ projects have included:

  • Digital walking tours, where students photographed different East St. Louis neighborhoods and parks and posted them in online maps
  • Oral history interviews, where students interviewed elders at the Clyde C. Jordan Senior Citizens Center in East St. Louis and turned them into podcasts
  • Documentary films, where students researched such topics as the history of education, sports and music in East St. Louis and recorded and edited the video
  • Coding and web design, where students built their own web pages

SIUE Introduces Online Organizational Talent Management Series

SIUE is introducing online organizational talent management courses that provide instruction and practical applications for incorporating industrial/organizational psychology into organizational decision-making. Enrollment is open now for the non-credit course modules that will begin in February. 

Topics include gathering high-quality survey data, analyzing and interpreting survey results, and designing structured interviews to improve the selection process accuracy. Courses are taught by Joel Nadler, PhD, associate professor of psychology in SIUE’s School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, an experienced professor and practitioner of industrial/organizational psychology,

“Village" -- A Bonding Experience for birth-1 1/2 years old

This Kindermusik class provides a delightful environment unlike any other. Through a unique blend of multi-level activities that include creative movement, vocal play, object and instrument exploration, and a colorful literature component, baby’s growth and development are stimulated and all senses are engaged. Kindermusik Village is for lap babies, crawlers and walkers.

Semester theme: Cock-a-doodle-Moo!
Hop on the hayride – it’s time to head for the farm! In this class, you will sing songs about the farm, including “Old MacDonald,” “Hayride,” and “Clever Cows.” You’ll engage in rituals and playful activities with your baby, including infant massage, lap bounces, exercise, and quiet time.

Tuition is $135 and is due by Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018.

“Our Time" -- On the Go! for 1 1/2-3 years old

This class encourages toddlers to uncover an engaging musical world while guiding confidence, self-control and communications skills. Singing, imitating sounds, rhyming and object identification foster language skills, while creative movement to various musical “moods” develops a sense of balance, timing and spatial awareness. Listening and turn-taking encourage blossoming social skills.

Semester theme: Away We Go!
Hop on the train, get in the car, board the plan, and Away We Go! This class focuses on transportation, a favorite topic for toddlers who are on the go, go, go! Sing and play along with favorite songs such as, “I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad” and “Wheels on the Bus.” 

Tuition is $160 and is due by Saturday, Jan. 6.

Tell Students about Awards Available through SIUE Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, Applications due March 2, 2018

The SIUE Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society is offering three awards to students. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2018.

The awards include:
Undergraduate Scholarship: One scholarship of up to $750 (which must be applied to undergraduate or graduate tuition and fees at SIUE) may be awarded. Eligibility requirements: Must be an undergraduate with at least junior standing (60 hours) at the end of the fall semester 2017, must have a minimum GPA of 3.5, and must have earned at least 24 semester hours at SIUE by the end of the fall semester 2017. Students with a 100 percent waiver for tuition and fees are not eligible. Please note: Applicants DO NOT have to be PKP members. An additional award of $250 is available if the recipient is a PKP member or an inductee at the April 2018 ceremony.

Undergraduate Paper Contest: Three cash prizes of $200, $100, and $50 will be awarded for papers meeting the criteria. Submissions are to be scholarly essays or research papers on any academic topic that can be understood by a lay audience. This contest is open to ANY SIUE undergraduate.

Graduate Fellowship: Graduating seniors with superior academic and leadership records, who are or will be members of Phi Kappa Phi by the application deadline, and who have applied to enroll as a full-time student in a post baccalaureate program of study for the 2018-19 academic year are eligible to apply. One fellowship award of up to $1,000 will be given through our local chapter, and then this person will be entered into the national contest where 51 fellowships of $5,000 and six fellowships of $15,000 will be awarded (SIUE nominees have won a national award in the past!).
