Learn to Maintain Your Cast Iron

Cast iron is a timeless way to cook your favorite foods. It is a perfect addition to your kitchen: in the home, your home on the road, or your home in the woods. I want you to enjoy your cast iron whether you have inherited a treasured family heirloom, or just acquired a new piece.

This course is intended to help you strip, season, and maintain that cast iron. These methods will help ensure that not only you, but also your descendants are able to enjoy the piece for its maximum lifespan.

You might be intimidated by cast iron! “What do you mean I can’t put it in the dishwasher?” “I can’t soak it!” “I can’t use soap!” Cast iron has been in use for so long that a lot of ideas about it are just as old-fashioned. I hope that this course will also help dispel some fears you might have about actually using your cast iron.

There are some safety concerns with cast iron. Because of its longevity, it’s often difficult to determine where a piece is from or what it has been used for. When working with an antique piece of unknown provenance, you might want to test the metal for the presence of lead. You can purchase a lead test at most home supply stores for roughly $10.

With safety noted, let’s get cooking!
