Drill and Practice Software: This software delivers sequences of worksheet-style questions, automatically adjusting their difficulty to match an individual student's responses. It is sometimes derided as "drill and kill." Used effectively, drill and practice can be an effective means of guided practice.

Tutorial Software: This software offers remediation for individual students. Good tutorial software allows a student to proceed at his or her own pace, provides for multiple repetitive examples that are self paced, and allows for quick reward or feedback.

Simulation Software: Simulations provide a unique environment for exploring new concepts, for gaining an understanding of the relationship between complex ideas, and for the construction of simplified working models of topics under study. Simulations are also one area in which computer technology is an appropriate method of delivery for an educational experience.

Instructional Game Software: Instructional games include clear, adequate directions for the learner and activities which are clearly directed toward an instructional goal. This type of software develops skills in a fun atmosphere.

Problem Solving Software: Problem solving software presents problems for students to solve based on skills they have previously acquired and will help students to create and improve their problem solving strategies.
