This web quest is obviously an open ended investigative design process,
intended for high school or even college classes. Some of the math may
be beyond high school classes abilities, or maybe not. I hope that
students will find unique solutions to the problem of highway noise.
Perhaps some electronic device can be used in an environmentally
friendly way to solve this problem. As far as assessment goes, I will
leave that up to you. Here are some ideas on how to proceed. I would
break this process into two parts. First the report and presentation.
This first part will lend itself well to information technology. You
may want to consider the professionalism of the presentation, the
amount of research that went into the process, and the persuasiveness
of the recommendations. The second part is the originality of the
recommendation. Is the recommendation doable, affordable, and non
intrusive. Did the student provide cost estimates? Engineering students
should be held to a higher standard for all of this, but I think that
this a worthwhile process for any student.
