What We Do

The mission of the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program is to:

  • Build awareness of the Library’s educational initiatives;
  • Provide content that promotes the effective educational use of the Library’s resources; and
  • Offer access to and promote sustained use of the Library’s educational resources.

The Library achieves this mission through collaborations between the Library and the K-12 educational community across the United States. The program contributes to the quality of education by helping teachers use the Library’s digitized primary sources to engage students, develop their critical thinking skills and construct knowledge.

Library’s TPS program and the resources are available to teachers.

The SIUE Teaching with Primary Sources program is housed within the University’s School of Education, Health and Human Behavior (SEHHB). The SEHHB’s primary goal is to provide high-quality academic programs committed to improving teaching, learning and human development in a diverse, rapidly changing and increasingly technological society. The SEHHB is equally committed to developing and enhancing partnerships and other collaborative relationships with community schools, agencies and organizations in an effort to advance research, development and innovative practices. Visit the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior.

We believe that learning with primary sources develops important skills of inquiry that encourages deep thinking and strengthens one’s ability to question. Our focus is to provide high-quality, personalized professional development and support to K-12 educators, with an emphasis on elementary grade level integration. Professional development is offered online and face-to-face to K-12 schools and colleges.  We also collaborate with professional organizations and TPS partners across the country to share additional professional development opportunities and teaching resources. Don’t forget to visit our Professional Development Opportunities page often for updates. To request a personalized professional development experience, please contact us!
