In the Shadow of Dred Scott: St. Louis Freedom Suits and the Legal Culture of Slavery in Antebellum America by Kelly M. Kennington

Dr. Kelly M. Kennington of Auburn University will speak about her recent book, In the Shadow of Dred Scott: St. Louis Freedom Suits and the Legal Culture of Slavery in Antebellum America. She will discuss her book, which focuses on the legal cases of enslaved men, women, and children, who sued for their freedom in antebellum St. Louis. The presentation is being co-sponsored by the Department of Historical Studies and the Black Studies Program.

Come out and join National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at this event that will focus on educating our community about the nine organizations that fall underneath NPHC. Social media allows for a leader to engage in effective communication with a large audience. Therefore, successful leaders will greatly benefit from enhancing their presence and comfortability with various social media platforms. This presentation will focus on how to utilize social media in a leadership capacity, and will incorporate techniques and netiquette rules to follow as a social leader. The Cougar Painting Studio invites SIUE students to paint a picture on canvas during a painting demonstration on Thursday, February 21st from 8:00-11:00pm in the MUC Goshen Lounge! There will be a beginner session and an intermediate/advance session for students to sign-up for along with a free paint session. Spots are limited and registration for the beginner and intermediate/advance sessions will begin at 7:00pm!

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs is seeking well-rounded students to participate in the development and implementation of the SIUE Experience Program as Cougar Guides. Cougar Guides will play a key role in the transition of new students by guiding and leading them through their first days at SIUE. Cougar Guides will have the opportunity to build relationships and interact with university staff and faculty, while leading a team of students beginning their SIUE journey. Individuals selected will serve as role models and mentors to incoming SIUE students, and will be responsible for making the SIUE Experience informative and fun for student participants.
