Thesis Completion for Spring 2021 Graduates

Graduating in May and working on your thesis?  Be sure you're aware of the spring 2021 thesis deadlines and responding quickly to any revision requirements you receive from your thesis reviewer or committee members. Be sure you are utilizing the formatting help available on our Formatting Resources website, including a new series of brief videos that will help you avoid the most common formatting mistakes!

The first draft must be fully submitted in ProQuest by 4/26/21, but earlier submissions are strongly encouraged to facilitate timely completion of all revisions by the final submission deadline of 5/31/21.

Responsible Conduct of Research Tools

The Graduate School Office of Research & Projects did a series last month highlighting available Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training and mentoring tools as well as the newly published RCR Mentorship Suite now available on Kuali Build.

The new RCR Mentorship Suite includes the Individual Development Plan (IDP), Skills Assessment and a new Responsible Conduct of Research Checklist in one form.  The goal of incorporating all these elements into one suite is to help graduate students and faculty mentors engage in a broader dialogue about research integrity and responsible conduct of research throughout student careers here at SIUE. By moving the form online it is easily stored and accessible for students and mentors to revisit yearly for re-evaluation.

All the RCR articles from last month can be found on the ORP News Webpage. You can find the RCR Mentorship Suite here or on our forms page. To read more about SIUE’s commitment to Responsible Conduct of Research and see all resources and tools available, check out our Responsible Conduct of Research website.

Cougar Pride: Student & Alumni Highlights

Meet Nathaniel Derousse, MS in Mathematics Student

Nathaniel Derousse earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematical Studies at SIUE, where he was able to get a jump start on his master’s degree during his senior year through participating in the early entry graduate program. Participating in the early entry program sparked Nathaniel’s interest in pursuing an advanced degree at SIUE. As a graduate student, he has been heavily involved in research related to reliability theory in imperfect debugging systems as the recipient of the Competitive Graduate Award (CGA), and he has also received other departmental awards throughout his tenure at SIUE.

Nathaniel balances his role as a graduate student with his full-time work as an actuary at Madison Mutual Insurance Company in Edwardsville. As he works through the extensive exam process involved in gaining actuary credentials, he credits his master’s program in mathematics for providing a foundation for his long-term career success.
