Summer Assistantships

If you are still interested in finding an assistantship for summer, visit our website to view postings or contact the individual departments to find openings.  In addition to contacting your major department, you may consider looking at student affairs, the library, or other academic departments for opportunities.

If you already have an assistantship lined up for the summer, here are some important items to consider...

  • Do NOT begin working until you have signed your contract.  Students who begin working before the contract is processed may not receive payment for those days.
  • Please register for summer classes as soon as possible to insure your contract will be processed before your first pay period.
  • Your assistantship may provide a tuition waiver.  You are still responsible for all fees.
  • Read the handbook
  • If you make any changes to your classes once the semester begins, contact us right away.  Even if it seems like a simple switch, it may impact your tuition waiver and we need to update the system.  Email Christina McGuiggan cmcguig@siue.edu with course changes.

If you have any questions, contact Christina McGuiggan.

Summer Tuition Waivers

Tuition Waivers for Former Graduate Assistants - Policy 4F1

Tuition may be waived for no more than one summer term for a graduate student who has held an appointment as a graduate assistant for the full length of two consecutive semesters, beginning with the fall semester. The waiver must be used in the summer term immediately following the two consecutive semesters of service as a graduate assistant. Such waivers shall be used only when reappointment as a graduate assistant is not possible for the said summer term. The waiver applies only to courses that count toward completion of the current degree program. No overload is allowed. The student must have an overall cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. The grant of such a waiver is subject to the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School.

Tuition waviers for Summer 2018 are due ASAP!  Please contact Christina McGuiggan with any questions.  cmcgiug@siue.edu or 618-650-3010

Graduating next semester?

Here are a few important deadlines you need to follow before graduation:

  • If you are completing a thesis (not a final project), the Registration of Title form is due to the registrar the first day of the semester in which you want to graduate.  If you will be doing research with human subjects, you must complete human subjects training and submit an IRB Protocol.
  • Every student must apply for graduation, regardless of whether you wish to participate in commencement.  Graduate applications must be submitted by the first day of the semester in which you want to graduate.
  • Commencement ceremonies are held at the end of fall and spring.  For more information please refer to the Commencement website.

Thesis Deadlines and Upcoming Workshops

Your final thesis or dissertation must follow specific formatting guidelines and be submitted electronically for approval by the Graduate School. Our website provides the details regarding these requirements.

Also, keep in mind that just submitting your thesis doesn't mean that you are finished! Read this important material about revisions and resubmissions.

Final thesis submission is due May 28, 2018.  All formatting requirements must have been completed and submitted by the deadline.  Theses not submitted by the deadline will result in a delay in graduation.

If you are completing a thesis in summer, fall, or next spring, please attend a thesis workshop to understand the guidelines and submission process.  Dates are listed on our website.

Graduate Student Textbook Rental

Graduate Students can now rent textbooks beginning fall 2018!  All students, including graduate students, will be charged one general fee, which includes a fee for textbook rental.  If you have already ordered a textbook for a graduate course from The Cougar Store for fall 2018, but would like to use the textbook rental program, please email bookstore@siue.edu to let them know that your requested book(s) will now be ordered through Textbook Service.
