Three students were selected to receive a Staff Senate Scholarship for the Fall 2019 semester, and they will be awarded at the September meeting. 

• Emily Take, daughter of Patty Take of ITS - $500
• Elizabeth Birdsell, daughter of Heather Birdsell of the School of Nursing - $500
• Mackenzie Schoeck, daughter of Lisa Schoeck of Human Resources - $500

The summer scholarship winners Louis Jones and Kailyn Meyers will also be recognized.

Jacob Graham, student body president will be a guest at the meeting.

Learn More About Give 30 Mentoring Program

The Madison County Regional Office of Education and the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior (SEHHB) invite you and your students to a meeting about the Madison County Give 30 Mentoring Program.

SIUE Information and Training Meeting:

Stay for the first 30 minutes of the meeting to learn about Give 30. Stay for the rest of the meeting, if you are ready to register as a potential mentor and save time by completing mandatory training and fingerprinting right away.

SIUE students selected as Give 30 mentors will commit to spending 30 minutes per week visiting a local teenager who has been through a disciplinary process or is otherwise struggling. 

Instructor Taylor Donohoo will present the same information on each date.

The SEHHB will provide cookies and drinks.

First Inclusive Conversation Session this Semester, Sept. 6

The first Inclusive Conversation session will be held:

The topic is Microaggressions in the Classroom. There will be a video presentation prior to the discussion.

Inclusive Conversations are designed to support critical conversations and understanding of campus climate issues for students, faculty and staff; social justice; and the collective responsibility to build a sustainable campus environment -- one which embodies citizenship, excellence, inclusion, integrity and wisdom.

Nominate an Accessibility Champion by Sept. 6

The Office for Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) invites you to nominate an SIUE community member, who you feel goes above and beyond to promote and defend accessibility throughout the SIUE campus community, both in and outside of the classroom, and should be recognized as a Champion of Accessibility.

The criteria for student nominees are as follows:

  • Actively engage with the ACCESS office and also participates in ACCESS-related events activities
  • Promote of accessibility, inclusion, awareness, and equity for themselves and their peers
  • Demonstrate commitment to the concept that all people, regardless of the nature or degree of an individual's disability, have the right and obligation to become full and contributing members of society
  • Vigorously dispels negative stigma and stereotypes related to students with disabilities and the ACCESS office

The criteria for faculty/staff nominees are as follows:

  • Help remove barriers for students with disabilities for full inclusion and participation in programs and services
  • Cooperate in promoting acceptance and awareness for students with disabilities in all aspects of the University and community life
  • Advocate for the civil rights of students with disabilities in order to increase their participation in the SIUE community
  • Demonstrate commitment to the concept that all people, regardless of the nature or degree of an individual's disability, have the right and obligation to become full and contributing members of society
  • Make contributions in addition to normal job requirements or when the achievements of students with disabilities are not likely to be recognized by other organizations
  • Significantly improve or enhance the quality of the higher educational experience in ways that make a substantial difference for a student with a disability

Registration for Saturday Youth Swim Lessons at the Student Fitness Center ends Friday, Sept. 6.

There are six, 45-minute sessions
10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Capacity for each class is 25 participants. SIUE students can register their child for $45, and SIUE faculty and staff can register their child for $60.

Parents and/or legal guardians must register their child for the swim lesson program.

Apply for Distinguished Research Professor by Sept. 9

The Graduate School is now accepting nominations for The Distinguished Research Professor.

The Distinguished Research Professor rank recognizes faculty members who have made an outstanding contribution to research or creative activities as a result of their continued commitment to scholarship beyond the period of their promotion to professor. Recipients of the Award will be recognized with the rank of "SIUE Distinguished Research Professor" for the duration of their tenure at SIUE. The recipients will be officially listed as “Distinguished Research Professor of [name of academic discipline].”

Recipients of the rank of “Distinguished Research Professor” will receive a $1,000 increase in their academic year base salary. They will also be provided with one semester of Assigned Time for Research, at a time to be negotiated with their department chair and school/college dean. Additionally, recipients of the “Distinguished Research Professor” rank will receive a medallion to be worn with their academic regalia, and their names will be placed on plaques displayed in Rendleman Hall.

Application portfolios are due to the Graduate School by 4:30 p. m. MondaySept. 9.

Nominations for SIUE Student Leader of the Month Open Until Sept. 10

The Kimmel Student Involvement Center, in partnership with the Edwardsville Rotary, is pleased to accept nominations for the SIUE Student Leader of the Month.

Individuals selected for this award will be recognized at an upcoming Rotary meeting, and at the annual Kimmel Leadership Awards Ceremony during the spring semester.

SIUE students can be nominated by students, faculty or staff. No self-nominations will be considered. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis, and should be received by the 10th of the month to be considered for that month's award. Any nominees not selected for one month, will be considered for the following months. Awards will be given for September through April each academic year.

Candidates will be selected based on the following criteria:

· High academic standards
· Campus involvement and activities
· Service to others on and off campus
· Leadership within their academic area or within an organization
· Demonstrated ability to promote spirit and pride at SIUE

Notice of Intent for NSF Advancing Informal STEM Learning, Due Sept. 13

The Graduate School announces the opening for submissions for the National Science Foundation Advanced Informal STEM Learning (AISL) competition.

The AISL program seeks to:

  • Advance new approaches to and evidence-based understanding of the design and development of STEM learning opportunities for the public in informal environments
  • Provide multiple pathways for broadening access to and engagement in STEM learning experiences
  • Advance innovative research on and assessment of STEM learning in informal environments
  • Engage the public of all ages in learning STEM in informal environments. 

The AISL program supports the following projects: (1) Pilots and Feasibility Studies, (2) Research in Service to Practice, (3) Innovations in Development, (4) Broad Implementation, (5) Literature Reviews, Syntheses or Meta-Analyses, and (6) Conferences.

Please email your Notice of Intent to Marc Kinnear by Friday, Sept. 13. The NSF deadline for submission is Wednesday, Nov. 6. NSF allows each institution to submit only three (3) proposals.
