Dr. Jessica DeSpain, CAS Going Award Winner, Gives Lecture Today

6 p.m. Reception with light refreshments and digital storytelling gallery
7 p.m. Lecture
Today
Friend's Corner, Lovejoy Library

We construct our sense of self through threads of narrative. Our tellings of the first time we rode a bike, broke a curfew, moved to a new place, or watched a love one decline punctuate our lives. Yet, it has become increasingly difficult to communicate stories of ourselves and to listen to and empathize with the story of others.

In her lecture, DeSpain will discuss her work in the field of age studies, which emphasizes how narratives both personal and cultural inform our perspective on stages of life and the responsibility we bear for those younger and older than ourselves and for generations to come.

For more information about DeSpain receiving the Going Award, visit SIUE News.

Encourage Students to Register for Sustained Dialogue

SIUE is offering the Sustained Dialogue program for the Spring 2019 semester.

What is Sustained Dialogue?

Sustained Dialogue is a way for the SIUE community to explore race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability status and other topics that aren’t always easy to talk about in diverse groups.

This 10-week program, Jan. 14, 2019-April 1, 2019, will transform students for the better through conversations to share not just opinions, but also hear stories and life experiences behind others’ perspectives. A learning space has been created for open dialogue that makes it possible for students from different sides of an issue to learn the root causes of community problems and build relationships to address these issues with new allies.

More information regarding the program and session offerings can be found on the SIUE Sustained Dialogue website.

The incentives for participating include:
• A FREE Sustained Dialogue T-shirt
• $$$ in Cougar bucks for completion of the program
• Free food throughout the 10-week program
• A chance to make an impact on the SIUE community and shape a changing world!

Space for the program is limited and only 120 students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please encourage students to sign up by completing this registration form.

For more information, please visit the SIUE Sustained Dialogue website or email Tarsha Moore at tarmoor@siue.edu.
