Attend the Women in IT Event, Today

The Association for Information Technology Professionals in collaboration with Brooksource Technical Youth and the CMIS Department at SIUE will present the Women in IT event.

This event is being held to support and encourage women who are interested in working in the information technology (IT) field. The event is open to men and women who want to learn more about the challenges faced by women in IT. 

The keynote speaker is Priscilla Jacks, vice president of Technology Risk Management at U.S. Bank within the Wealth Management and Investment Services division. She has more than 20 years of IT experience in multiple Fortune 150 companies across retail and financial industries. Prior to joining U.S. Bank, she was a Senior IT Operations leader at Lowe's Companies. 

Industry partners from Datotel, Edward Jones, Express Scripts, AT&T, and Anheuser-Busch will also be on hand to speak with students.

2018 Celebration of World Faiths at Center for Spirituality and Sustainability

The Center for Spirituality and Sustainability will be holding its Annual Celebration of World Faiths:

The program will be a presentation on “Religious Freedom in America: Building Bridges of Trust.”

Dr. Jaymeson Stroud, MD, president of the O’Fallon, Ill. Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (LDS), will be the featured speaker. He will share stories of religious persecution that LDS members experienced in Illinois and Missouri in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries to demonstrate the importance of religious freedom, as intended by the founders of our country.

The program will include an animated video that explains in clear terms the origins of the separation of church and state doctrine, and its importance to all faith traditions within the context of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Questions from the audience will follow Stroud’s presentation.

Refreshments and opportunity for fellowship will be provided after the program.

The event is free and open to the public. Parking will be free on campus in Visitor Lot B adjacent to the Fuller Dome.

The Center for Spirituality and Sustainability is a nonprofit multi-faith home for spirituality and sustainability efforts housed in the Buckminster Fuller dome on the SIUE campus.

Distress Tolerance Counseling, Oct. 22

Counseling Services presents the Distress Tolerance in Self and Others series. 

You are invited to attend one of the distress tolerance sessions as Dr. Courtney Boddie, director of Counseling Services, guides us in learning how to effectively support someone in distress and when to refer them.

Participants will also learn more about their own responses to being with someone in distress.

SIUE’s Tiana Clark, MFA, will read from her new collection of poems "I Can’t Talk About the Trees Without the Blood," which won the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize for Poetry from the University of Pittsburgh Press.

Clark is an assistant professor in SIUE’s new master of fine arts creative writing program.

“This will be my first public reading at SIUE! I'm excited and eager to share my work with the incredible faculty and students," said Clark. "I delve into personal and public histories, explicating memories and muses around race, elegy, family and faith by making and breaking received forms as well as probing mythology, literary history, my own ancestry, and, yes, even Rihanna.”

SLP Grad Program Invites Campus to Reaccreditation Site Visit, Oct. 29

Members of the campus and surrounding communities are invited to a public meeting as part of the speech-language pathology graduate program’s reaccreditation site visit.

The program is under review for reaccreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation and Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA).

Campus Kitchen at SIUE is once again hosting a food drive for “Give Thanks Give Food.”

This themed food drive will collect nonperishable and canned food donations that will be used to make Thanksgiving meal grocery bags for Community Care Center clients in Granite City.

Donations can be purchased through Thursday, Nov.1 for free delivery to Campus Kitchen at SIUE at the follwing link, https://yougivegoods.com/siue-turkeypalooza-2018.

Additionally, donation boxes will be located in various campus locations until Nov. 1 in the Vadalabene Center, Kimmel Student Involvement Center, Lovejoy Library (Information Desk), Peck Hall and Rendleman Hall.

Security Enhanced at Lovejoy Library

Two new video surveillance cameras are scheduled to be installed at Lovejoy Library. The cameras will be installed on the second and third floors near the entrance and exit doors.

Lovejoy Library serves a large population of students, faculty and staff, as well as the surrounding metropolitan communities. With the library's increase in hours from 11 p.m.-1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, the additional cameras are being installed as a preventive measure in areas where previous unwarranted incidents have occurred.

Furthermore, the additional cameras and signage will provide a level of comfort for those students and patrons using the library. The new equipment will be used by the SIUE Police Department to protect students, reduce the risk of theft, and reduce damage to property in the library.

In accordance with Section II (F) of the University’s Video Surveillance Policy, Vice Chancellor for Administration Rich Walker has approved the installation of the additional security equipment.
