Announcing University Staff Senate's Fall 2018 Scholarships

Beginning Saturday, June 24, the University Staff Senate will be accepting applications for its Fall Scholarships. The deadline for receipt of the entire typed application packet is 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 10.

The University Staff Senate has established a fund to provide scholarship awards to qualifying SIUE students. To be eligible for consideration for a scholarship award, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be the son, daughter, grandchild, spouse or civil union partner of a presently employed or retired civil service (excluding non-status) or professional staff employee (excluding appointments of less than 50 percent and term appointments of less than six months) of SIUE.
  • You must meet admissions requirements for undergraduate study at SIUE.

The scholarship award will be applied to your University account for the semester. This award will be reported to the Office of Student Financial Aid to be considered in evaluating your overall financial aid package. Should this amount, combined with other awards or payments, cause a credit balance on your account, a refund check will be mailed to you from the Bursar's Office.

SIUE makes it easy to apply for scholarships quickly online! Through the SIUE scholarship management system, all students can browse and apply for more than 450 scholarships available in the various schools, departments and units at SIUE. This system also offers information on various external or outside scholarships available.

To browse all scholarship opportunities and awards visit siue.academicworks.com. To begin a scholarship application, follow these steps:
1. Login at siue.academicworks.com/users/sign_in with your e-ID and Password. You must have already been accepted to SIUE and received your e-ID and password.
2. Fill out the general scholarship application. The system will search for scholarships and awards you may be eligible for. For some, you will automatically be entered into the applicant pool, and others may require you to answer additional questions.
3. Continue to check the system regularly as new scholarships become available at different times, also be sure to browse our “external” scholarship list that provides information and direct links to outside scholarship websites.

If you meet the eligibility criteria above, the software will direct you to the Staff Senate Fall Scholarship page. Please, complete by the deadline listed above.

You are responsible for contacting the University Governance Office to ensure your application packet is complete. You will be notified of the decision of the Scholarship Selection Committee.

For more information about the application process, please contact the Interim University Governance Office Support Staff, Gail Hughes at 650-2770 or Collin Van Meter at 650-5240.

Best wishes for your continued academic progress,
Collin Van Meter, Chair
Staff Senate Scholarship Committee

Sign Up Today for SIUE's Abraham Lincoln Online Summer Graduate Course, July 2-Aug. 4

SIUE's Department of Teaching and Learning is offering a new three-credit online summer course “Teaching Lincoln, K-12,” in collaboration with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. Teachers and graduate students from across the country can plan their own trip anytime this summer and enroll in the course that spans July 2-August 4.

The class consists of online sessions and requires a self-organized trip to the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The course uses a critical perspective, which implies the ability to describe, analyze and synthesize the history of the Lincoln era using common core, C-3 and social studies standards as background for teaching in the schools.

Information about the course (CI 568-504) and graduate course registration processes can be found on the websites of both the SEHHB and the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The course does not include the cost of trips, site entrance, parking or any additional materials, fees or costs.

Blackboard Ally is Coming!

The offices of Educational Outreach, Disability Support Services and Information Technology Services are collaborating to bring Blackboard Ally to your Blackboard courses this fall.

Blackboard Ally is a product that provides alternate formats for uploaded PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and HTML content, in order to meet the needs of diverse learners. For example, it can convert a text document to an audio file. It also assists faculty in making content more accessible by pointing out where formatting can be improved or providing alternative file types.

By mid-July, you will notice new indicator icons in your courses that will show how your content measures up to web accessibility standards. If you click on these icons, Blackboard Ally will guide you through steps for improving content. Accessibility is a key factor in student success, so we hope that faculty devote the time to design courses with all students in mind.

Please take the time to review this overview of the Blackboard Ally tool and how it will function in your course. After watching the video, if you would like additional training, please register for one of the training sessions or contact us at idlt_center@siue.edu.
