Roccia Named SIUE Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

SIUE has named Miriam Roccia as associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs. Roccia will assume her new role on Monday, July 2.

Roccia brings more than 18 years of professional experience in higher education to SIUE. Since 2012, she has been serving as assistant dean of students at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She oversaw UMSL’s residential life and housing, recreation and wellness, Millennium Student Center, student involvement and new student programs. She joined UMSL in 2007 and previously served as associate director in the Office of Student Involvement and director of student life.

“I am pleased to welcome Miriam to SIUE and am confident her extensive background and experience in higher education will complement and advance the important work of the Division of Student Affairs,” said Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Jeffrey Waple. “I extend my gratitude to the search committee, chaired by SIUE Deputy Athletic Director Jason Coomer, for identifying four excellent candidates for this position. Their work was incredibly helpful in our decision to welcome Miriam as a valuable partner in our student-centered commitment to educational excellence.”

Volunteers Needed to help with SIUE PrideFest 2018, June 24

Dear Allies,

We are days away from PrideFest 2018! This year’s theme is Remember. Rise. Respect.

We invite you to represent our University community by walking with us during the Parade on Sunday, June 24 in St. Louis

Safe Zone of SIUE, sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, will host a booth at the festival to support the community and to tell visitors great things about our University.

We are looking for volunteers and shift leaders to staff our booth, and help us give away spin-the-wheel prizes. This is a fun time, and the energy at the festival is exciting and positive.

We need volunteers in as little as one-hour increments. Shift leaders are needed in three-hour increments. Shift leaders will serve as a backup to volunteers not able to attend, assist with setup or takedown and call authorities in case of an emergency.

For more information, contact Shelley Price-Williams at shewill@siue.edu or Mary Sue Love at marlove@siue.edu
Visit the event website for festival information at PrideSTL.

Sign Up Today for SIUE's Abraham Lincoln Online Summer Graduate Course, July 2-Aug. 4

SIUE's Department of Teaching and Learning is offering a new three-credit online summer course “Teaching Lincoln, K-12,” in collaboration with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. Teachers and graduate students from across the country can plan their own trip anytime this summer and enroll in the course that spans July 2-August 4.

The class consists of online sessions and requires a self-organized trip to the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The course uses a critical perspective, which implies the ability to describe, analyze and synthesize the history of the Lincoln era using common core, C-3 and social studies standards as background for teaching in the schools.

Information about the course (CI 568-504) and graduate course registration processes can be found on the websites of both the SEHHB and the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The course does not include the cost of trips, site entrance, parking or any additional materials, fees or costs.

Please Donate to the Career Development Center's Professional Attire Collection

Each year we have students that are in need of professional attire for interviews, career fairs, networking events and practicum/co-op/internship experiences.

Unfortunately, not all students have the resources to obtain the appropriate attire for these occasions. This can decrease students’ opportunities and self-esteem.

You can help! Ready to do a little cleaning in your closet?

The Career Development Center is planning to take donations of professional attire items through July 13 in preparation for the fall recruiting season.

We will be accepting both men’s and women’s attire. All items need to be in good condition, clean and ready to be given to students. We are hoping to get a variety of sizes and options, so we can make this service available to any student in need.

Items can include:
• Suits
• Dresses
• Skirts
• Dress Pants/Khakis
• Sweater sets
• Polos
• Blouses
• Belts
• Ties
• Anything that could be worn for a professional event with employers
• Anything that would be appropriate as a starting point for a professional wardrobe

Items can be dropped off at the Career Development Center (CDC), located in the basement of the Student Success Center, room 0281. Please drop off items during regular business hours from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

For more information, contact Carrie Smolar at 650-3708.
