Lifelong Learning offers a look at post WWII aeronautical history, general and special education in China and local resources for caregiving needs.

“Spoils of War: The U.S., Germany, and the Great Technology Transfer of WWII” will be presented by James Weingartner, PhD, emeritus professor in the Department of Historical Studies. In addition to rocket technology, German aeronautical innovations on American jet aircraft design also transferred here post WWII. These advances in aircraft design are still seen in planes flying today. We will explore this remarkable transfer of technology, which is unparalleled in modern history.

“An Exploration of the Chinese Education System: From the Perspective of an American Teacher” will be presented by Kimberly McClellan, Study Abroad student and SIUE graduate. From photos and personal experience from her travel study abroad, she will explore the Chinese general and special education system in Gansu Province, China, discussing the impact of the Chinese culture on education and pointing out ways in which the American education system differs.

“Conversations on Caregiving” with Ms. Nancy Berry, executive director, St. John’s Community Care and Ms. Stacey Rhodes, Adult Daycare program director. Learn about local resources available to caregivers, family members, and individuals to help cope with financial, legal, housing, care options and general problem solving of issues often experienced by older adults and caregivers.

The SIUE faculty, retired faculty, staff and students may attend for FREE. The cost is $5 for the public, unless otherwise stated, to attend on campus presentations.

The Office of Projects and Research will hold an information session regarding the 2017 Hoppe Research Professor Award Program and Vaughnie Lindsay New Investigator Award Program.

The Vaughnie Lindsay New Investigator Awards are made to SIUE junior tenure-track faculty and the Hoppe Research Professor Awards are made to SIUE faculty in order to recognize and support individual programs of research or creative activities.

These Awards recognize faculty members whose research or creative activities have the promise of making significant contributions to their fields of study. Application due dates are posted on the website.

Safe Zone Ally Training, Oct. 28, Nov. 4

Safe Zone is once again offering Ally Training.

Training is being offered on two dates:

The goal of training is to provide attendees skills and understanding for supporting the LGBT community.

Diwali N Dandiya Night is a cultural event to showcase Indian tradition and culture to the community. A lavish buffet will be served, with the food being arranged from some of the best restaurants in St Louis.

Nomination Deadline Extended for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award

SIUE is pleased to announce the solicitation of nominations for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award for Faculty/Staff and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award for Community Member.

The deadline to submit award forms has been extended to Friday, Oct. 28. Please submit all completed nominations to the Kimmel Student Involvement Center, Box 1168, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Edwardsville, IL 62026-1168.

These annual awards recognize an outstanding community member and faculty/staff member who exemplify the philosophy of nonviolent social change as espoused by King. The winners will be recognized at the 32nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Luncheon at SIUE on Wednesday, January 18, 2017.

Organizations, businesses, agencies, or individuals may nominate a person who is an Illinois resident and at least 21 years old for the community award. Nominations for the Faculty/Staff award must be for a current faculty or staff at SIUE. The person must embrace the humanitarian principles and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and must have initiated, developed, or have participated in programs, services, or activities which have inspired tolerance, understanding, and sensitivity with regard to diversity issues and/or persons of underrepresented groups.

Please consider nominating either a deserving community member or faculty/staff for this prestigious award.

Last Lil' Cougar Clinic, Oct. 29

Alton Memorial Hospital and SIUE women's basketball are teaming up for the Lil' Cougar Clinic for area girls in grades first through eighth.

The clinic will be held at SIUE's Vadalabene Center for the fourth consecutive year:

The cost of the clinic is $25, and each participant will receive a T-shirt and a basketball. All participating kids also will receive a free pass to all SIUE Cougar Athletics events.

Club Sports Raise Money for Breast Cancer During the Month of October

Campus Recreation’s Club Sports program will once again raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer research. The disease severely impacts students and their families.

Thanks to Women’s Club Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Club Volleyball, Club Ice Hockey and Club Football for their efforts in raising money to donate to a breast cancer research center. The Sports Club Executive Council will vote at their next meeting to determine to which charity the funds will be donated.

Special pink T-shirts will be sold during these Club Sports home events throughout the month of October:

  • 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 -- Club Ice Hockey – Pink in the Rink game at the East Alton Ice Arena
  • 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30 -- Club Football vs. Michigan State at Club Sports Field

The STEM Resource Center is an important resource for Southern Illinois, offering materials and written resources to educators and families in the area, free of charge.

“Science and math topics are greatly improved with tools and demonstrations that can be prohibitively expensive or technical for everyone to have access,” Resource Center Manager Colin Wilson said. “Through grants, donations and outreach programming, we are able to make exemplary education available to everyone.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with resource center items and watch exciting demonstrations. They can peruse new materials on display and participate in raffle drawings.
