Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is establishing a university-wide Center, the mission of which is to develop, strengthen, and promote STEM research, education and outreach in the region. We are seeking an innovative, visionary leader for the Center to provide centralized leadership for STEM research, education and outreach activities across all academic units at SIUE. Specifically, the director will: (a) coordinate strategies for enhancing external funding for new and existing STEM initiatives; (b) oversee outreach activities aimed at enhancing professional competencies in STEM education for P-20 students and teachers in the region; (c) engage in networking activities with local educational and corporate entities; and (d) conduct effective assessment of the Center’s initiatives. The position of director is a 12-month appointment with the opportunity for tenure in one of the university’s existing departments. The director will report to the Associate Provost for Research and will supervise a staff including an associate director for outreach and an administrative assistant.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
A terminal degree and eligibility for rank of Associate Professor is required. However, a Full Professor with terminal degree in a STEM-related field is preferred and experience with P-12 populations is highly desirable. The successful candidate must possess experience creating cross-disciplinary collaborative teams focused on STEM research, education and/or community outreach activities. A demonstrated ability to effectively lead others and a record of working collaboratively with internal and external academic and corporate constituents is critical to the success of the director and, therefore, the Center. Extensive experience in successful grant writing and capability to lead institutional change processes in a university setting are also essential. This is a 12 month, continuing appointment with a July 1, 2009 (or as soon as possible thereafter) start date. Review of applications will begin on May 15, 2009 and continue until position is filled.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director will be responsible for the organization and administration of the Center including all fiscal and personnel-related matters. In addition to the facilitation and management of existing research and outreach activities, the director is expected to generate new projects through external funding sources to advance the Center, university, and region in all STEM areas. The Director will also be responsible for leading, promoting, and collaborating on all grant-related initiatives associated with the Center.
