Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Center for STEM Research, Education, and Outreach is a collaborative enterprise among several SIUE academic units (the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the Schools of Education (SOEd), and Engineering (SOEn), and others), local community colleges and school districts, regional offices of education, and the community at large.  The Center’s Mission is to develop, strengthen, and promote STEM research, education, and outreach in the region.  The aim of the Center is to further enhance the teaching and learning of STEM education in preservice and inservice teachers, and serve as a stimulus and resource for outreach activities.  The Center is advised by a comprehensive board, including the deans from CAS, SOEd, and SOEn, the Executive Director for Educational Outreach, the Associate Provost for Research, and representatives from local community colleges, local school districts, regional offices of education, and representatives of private companies.

Functions

The Center provides opportunities for improving the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics on campus and in local public schools and community colleges.  Stakeholders generate these opportunities via collaborative grantsmanship and outreach activities.  Specifically, the Center will provide centralized leadership for STEM research and education coordination across all academic units at SIUE with a reporting line to the Associate Provost for Research and an Advisory Board, provide centralized and coordinated strategies for enhancing external funding for STEM programming, foster a faculty exchange program between SIUE and area public schools at all levels, create and deliver outreach activities that will enhance professional competencies in science education and provide effective assessment of STEM initiatives.
