Tickets Still Available for The Marvelous Machine, Oct. 22

Tickets still are available for The Marvelous Machine: The Inside Story of Our Insides:

2 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 22
Mainstage in Dunham Hall

The play is sponsored by A Season for the Child (SfC)--the family-oriented live theater season offered by the SIUE Friends of Theater and Dance (FOTAD).

The Marvelous Machine, by John R. Carroll, is billed as an “imaginative trip” through the human body, and has been received enthusiastically by teachers and administrators, as well as students throughout the country.

It will be staged by SIUE’s Cougar Theater, a campus group that specializes in children’s theater.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children and are available through the SIUE Fine Arts box office at (618) 650-2774.

Please note that with the start of this new season, some of the performances during the SfC year will be staged at 2 p.m. only, (unless otherwise noted) as opposed to curtain times in the past of 7 p.m.

SfC, which premiered in 1990, features adaptations of various children’s stories using interactive techniques that not only delight children and parents, but also provide a thorough learning experience. FOTAD, a support group for the SIUE Department of Theater and Dance, uses SfC proceeds to help fund merit awards for talented SIUE theater and dance students.

WSIE’s Segue Features Social Media’s Impact on the Presidential Race

As the presidential race approaches its climax, Greg Budzban, PhD, Dean of the SIUE College of Arts and Sciences, welcomes Ken Moffett and Laurie Rice, associate professors in the SIUE Department of Political Science, to WSIE 88.7 FM's Segue for a discussion about political engagement among college students.

The 2008 election marked a tipping point for social media and its role in politics. Moffett stated that two years prior to that election, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama and his campaign organization, “got together with the creators of Facebook, seeing an immediate application of online tools to be able to mobilize voters.” He followed this up by creating a Facebook account and using social media in ways that previously were untapped.

This provided an opportunity to investigate the ways in which social media affects civic activity, especially among young people. To do so, Moffett and Rice recently wrote a book, Web 2.0 and the Political Mobilization of College Students. They collected survey data in 2008 as the U.S. approached Obama’s first presidential election, and followed it up with data from 2012. They collected data from SIUE students, and compared it against nationwide survey data to ensure that their findings can be generalized beyond a single institution.

Tune in to WSIE every Sunday at 9 a.m. as weekly guests discuss issues on SIUE’s campus.
