Solid Lines Productions presents: "Boy Gets Girl"

Solid Lines Productions will feature a staged reading of Rebecca Gilman's "Boy Gets Girl." The play is a fascinating and disturbing exploration of stalking, and how insidiously stalkers isolate their victims from friends, family and any other potential support systems in their life.

The reading will be followed by a talk-back with the actors, director, and a professional in the field of domestic and sexual violence.

Admission is free. In-kind donations for St. Martha's Hall will be accepted at the door of the performance.

Viewing content is suitable for those 18 years old and older. Content may be disturbing to some audience members. Professional counselors will be present for the duration of the performance as a resource for anyone who seeks assistance.

Lifelong Learning Classes This Week Look at Gender and Plants

"The Greatest Show on Earth: Masculinity, Femininity, and the Performance of Gender” will be presented by Alison Reiheld, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Philosophy, and director of the Women’s Study Program.
10:30-11:45 a.m.
Wednesday, Oct 19
Morris University Center, Illinois Room

We often think of gender as something we are born with, even as a key part of our identity. These may be part of gender, but some have argued gender is also, and maybe even mostly, a performance. Gender is a major part of who we are in nearly every culture on the globe. Is it the greatest show on earth?

1:15-2:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct 19
Morris University Center, Illinois Room

Because future long term space missions will rely on plants for food and oxygen, learn more about the journey that led Luesse and a colleague, Dr. Sarah Wyatt of Ohio Unviersity to a grant from NASA to investigate how plants adjust and cope with the stress of life in space.

The SIUE community of faculty, retired faculty, staff and students are always invited and may attend for FREE.
The cost is $5 for the public to attend.

Cheryl Hanvey Receives October Employee Recognition Award, Reception Oct. 20

Cheryl Hanvey, assistant to the provost, is the recipient of the October Employee Recognition Award. Cheryl was nominated by Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Denise Cobb with support from Dr. Tom Jordan and Dr. Erin Behnen.

Please join us in congratulating Cheryl Hanvey as the Employee of the Month:

10 a.m.
Thursday, Oct. 20
Office of the Provost

You can also send Cheryl a congratulatory email to chanvey@siue.edu

“From the moment I joined the Office of the Provost, I recognized Cheryl as the 'go to' person in the office, keeping everything and everyone moving and organized," said Cobb. "She knows what needs to be done, is extremely efficient at her work, goes beyond expectations to make sure things are done on time and well and is always very positive and helpful.”

“Wow, what an honor to be chosen not once, but twice as Employee of the Month. The e is a fabulous place to work, and the people in the Provost’s Office are the best, bar none," said Hanvey. "We have a very special team—a family—who all work together for the good of our students, the University and each other. While I’m thrilled to receive the award, I’m renaming it “Office of the Month” as the entire office is deserving.

Attend Going Lecture, Presented by Dr. Andrew Neath

Dr. Andrew Neath is the 2016 recipient of the SIUE College of Arts and Science’s distinguished William and Margaret Going Endowed Professorship Award.

As part of the Going Award, Neath will expand upon his research during a public lecture, entitled, “The Replication Crisis in Science: A Statistical Perspective.”

7 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 20
Morris University Center, Conference Room A

“There’s a growing concern over the large number of scientific findings accepted as truth, that later fail upon attempts at replication,” Neath said. “Public support for science requires that its results be trusted. My presentation will be aimed at a general audience, since errors in statistical reasoning damage our decision-making ability, not just in science, but also in fields such as law, medicine and business.”

Neath will share multiple examples of how poor statistical reasoning has led to damaging outcomes, and conversely, how proper statistical reasoning perfectly explains what at first glance may seem contradictory.

Now Accepting Fall Nominations for the Newly Revised Employee Recognition Program

Do you work alongside someone who has a strong commitment toward achieving excellence in their work? Why not nominate them for the Employee Recognition Program award?

The Employee Recognition Program criteria and eligibility have been recently updated. New criteria allow for repeat nominations based on departmental changes and/or length of time from prior award selection.

The Employee Recognition Program Award is an esteemed accolade bestowed on an employee who epitomizes the University’s core values in his/her daily work. The employee is engaged in accomplishing the mission of the University and routinely exceeds the call of duty.

The program is designed to recognize staff for their exceptional accomplishments and service to our community. Awards are presented once a month at a departmental ceremony. All monthly recipients are also recognized at the annual service awards reception.

For the revised nomination criteria and the updated nomination form, visit EmployeeRecognitionProgram
