Note these University Planning and Budget Council Appointments

I am pleased to announce that Professor Morris Taylor, PAPA, has agreed to continue as Chair of the University Planning and Budget Council for another year and that Professor Nancy Lutz, Anthropology, will serve as Chair-Designate.

Dr. Taylor’s term as Chair was to end on June 30th, and John Navin, as Chair-Designate, was scheduled to begin serving as the new Chair on July 1.

Dean Navin’s resignation required us to make new appointments. According to University Policy, the Chair and the Chair-Designate of UPBC are selected by the Presidents of the Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, and Student Government in consultation with the Chancellor.

The Senate presidents recommend, and I approved, the appointments of Taylor as Chair for one year and Lutz as Chair-Designate. Dr. Lutz will assume the duties of UPBC Chair on July 1, 2017.

The UPBC is responsible for advising the allocation of the University budget and serves a particularly critical function during this time of transition. I want to thank professors Taylor and Lutz for serving our faculty, staff and students in these vitally important roles.

Dr. Timothy Schoenecker Named School of Business Interim Dean

SIUE Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Denise Cobb has named Timothy Schoenecker, PhD, as interim dean of the School of Business. Schoenecker has agreed to serve for a period of two years to accommodate other leadership changes within the University and retains the option to be a candidate for the permanent position. The appointment is contingent upon SIU Board of Trustees approval.

An associate professor of management and marketing in the School, Schoenecker takes the leadership reins Friday, July 1 from John Navin, PhD, who resigned to assume the same duties at Ohio Northern University.

Schoenecker previously served as interim dean for the School in 2007 and 2008. He returned to full-time faculty duties in fall 2008 after 18 months of productive leadership. Prior to that role, he served as associate dean for academic affairs for more than four years. He has provided leadership at the University level as chair of the University Planning and Budget Council and, most recently, as chair of the steering committee for the chancellor’s ad hoc University Congress.

Schoenecker joined the SIUE faculty in fall 1992 in the Department of Management and Marketing. His teaching interests are in the areas of strategic management and entrepreneurship. His research interests are primarily in the areas of corporate governance and top management teams.

Cougar Lake Pool Background Explained

There have been a number of inquiries on the discuss list recently regarding SIUE’s agreement with the City of Edwardsville to lease the Cougar Lake Pool, and I wanted to provide some background information.

The main objective of the Cougar Lake pool was to offer recreational opportunities for our students. Even though the pool was funded by student fees, it no longer made financial sense for SIUE to continue operating the pool.

By leasing the pool to the City, the University will save a significant amount of money. Equally important, our students will still be able to use the pool for free.

Additionally, the City of Edwardsville and Village of Glen Carbon have graciously agreed to waive the residency requirement for SIUE faculty and staff members who would like to purchase either daily passes or a membership. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

SIUE Suzuki Program Offers String Lessons and Camp

The SIUE Suzuki program has several opportunities for string players this summer! You do not need to be a current SIUE Suzuki program student to participate in either of these.

Summer String Lessons: We offer a six-week summer lesson session, open to anybody, even adults, whether or not you already have playing experience. Summer lessons can help prevent that notorious summer learning loss.

Prices and registration details are available here.

Summer String Camp: We would love to have your string-playing child join us for four days of camp this July 19-22!

All string camp details and registration are available here.

For more information on any of our programs call 650-2839 or email suzukiprogram@siue.edu.

This digital humanities unconference is a small, open, inexpensive meeting where humanists and technologists of all skill levels learn and build together.

The breakout sessions are loosely formed prior to the conference and finalized the first day of the unconference. This allows for a dynamic, collaborative atmosphere as opposed to a formal, rigid and competitive format of a typical conference setting.

The theme of this year’s THATCamp is “Engaging Communities through Digital Humanities.”

We invite you to come and share your ideas for digital humanities, community and collaboration.

Check Out These Two New Summer Camps

The SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior and the Office of Educational Outreach are hosting two new summer camps in July to help foster a spirit of adventure, creativity and learning for children ages 8-12.

Explorer Summer Camp provides an enriching, investigative experience in which children learn how to “think like an explorer” during educational activities inspired by Lewis and Clark.

Explorer II Summer Camp inspires cultural understanding through a journey around the world for children as they learn about different regions and their unique people, art, literature, music and more.
