Undergraduate Scholars Showcase, Today

It’s time again for the SIUE Undergraduate Scholars Showcase. You are invited to learn about the outstanding work SIUE’s undergraduates have accomplished in their major programs.

2-4 p.m., with a reception following
Today
Morris University Center

The Undergraduate Scholars Showcase is our annual opportunity to highlight the depth and variety of learning experiences offered by SIUE’s Senior Assignment program and the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) program.

Each academic unit demonstrates the best of what the University's undergraduates have mastered. Each department and program nominates two outstanding senior assignment projects to be presented at the Undergraduate Scholars Showcase. In keeping with the spirit of last year’s event, URCA associates and assistants will be displaying their presentations as well.

Each participant will receive a certificate of achievement and will be honored at a closing reception. This growing event allows students, faculty and community members an opportunity to celebrate learning and our students’ accomplishments.

For more information, contact Erin Behnen at 650-3639 or etimpe@siue.edu.

Sexual Assault Awareness Training

Last year, the state of Illinois passed the Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act (“Act”) and amended other campus safety laws to address the issues of sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking on college campuses. While there are a number of new requirements imposed by the Act, the primary requirement that will involve numerous individuals on campus to ensure compliance is the requirement that SIUE train all students on sexual violence primary prevention and awareness on an annual basis.

This includes any student who takes one or more classes at SIUE. As such, the sexual assault awareness online training program (Haven) that was required of all incoming students this past year to comply with federal requirements will be expanded to all students during the upcoming school year (2016-17).

If a student fails to complete the required training, a registration hold will be placed on their account until the course is completed. Once the course is completed, the registration hold will be removed.

Numerous offices and individuals across campus will be working to inform all students and partners about the new requirements. Additional information will be forthcoming.

Donate Your Gently-Used Books to the SIUE Head Start Program

Please consider donating gently-used books for children who are between ages six months and six years.

To donate you can:

  • Send books via campus mail to Steve Hupp, Box 1121
  • Drop them off in the red tub across from the Department of Psychology in the basement of Alumni Hall
  • Email Hupp to come pick them up at sthupp@siue.edu

Hupp's goal is to collect as many gently-used books as possbile by Friday, May 6. However, he will continue to accept them all year.

Most of the books will be sent home with children attending the SIUE Head Start program. The books come with a letter to parents emphasizing that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends daily reading with children starting at birth. The letter also promotes the value of incorporating reading into the bedtime routine and provides tips for making daily reading more meaningful and effective.

The need is great. There are about 1,500 children enrolled in the SIUE Head Start program each year.
