Understanding Students' Multifaceted Identities, April 13

Please update your calendars and join us for a NACADA AdvisorConnect online webinar presentation entitled, "Intersectionality: Understanding Our Students’ Multifaceted Identities."

1-2 p.m.
Wednesday, April 13
Student Success Center, Room 1203

In advising, we often think about the separate needs of specific student populations. What we may fail to understand, however, is that none of our students possess a single identity factor. Intersectionality provides an understanding of the multi-layered identities inhabited by our students (and ourselves).  Grounded in reference to theorists such as Audre Lorde, Patricia Hill Collins and Evangelina Holvino, our panel will consider how we can create our own intentionally intersectionalist approach to deepen both our understanding of student needs and our critical self-reflections as advisors.

The presentation is sponsored by the Office of Retention and Student Success. For more information, click here.

FMLA Overview Session, April 14

Registration is required so that sufficient materials and space will be available. Please RSVP to Bonnie Brueggemann, benefits counselor, at bbruegg@siue.edu. Include your name, 800-number (Banner/University ID), job title, department and the number of staff you supervise. You will receive a confirmation email upon registration.

The Trojan Women, Opens April 20

SIUE's Department of Theater and Dance will present The Trojan Women in Dunham Hall Theater:

7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 20-Saturday, April 23

2 p.m.
Sunday, April 24

Written by Euripides, with a new translation by Nicholas Rudall, The Trojan Women presents a bleak and agonizing portrait of war's brutality inspired by a barbaric act of retribution committed on the Isle of Melos during the war between Athens and Sparta.

The Trojan Women is one of the harshest plays ever written,” said Chuck Harper, production director and professor of performance in the Department of Theater and Dance. “It is also one of the boldest and most provocative. It was first performed nearly 2,500 years ago, yet sadly, it is always current. The Trojan Women can be set at any time in human history and it will resonate with global events.”

Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for seniors, non-SIUE students, and SIUE retirees, alumni, faculty and staff. SIUE students with a valid I.D. get in free and all seating is general admission.

Tickets can be purchased at the Theater and Dance Box Office in Dunham Hall, Room 1042B, by email at theater-tickets@siue.eduor by calling 618-650-2774.

Microaggressions are common verbal, behavioral and environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile or negative slights to marginalized groups. Perpetrators of microaggressions are often unaware that they engage in such interactions when they interact with minorities. (Sue, et al, Columbia University, Teachers College, 2007)

Each academic unit demonstrates the best of what the University's undergraduates have mastered. Each department and program nominates two outstanding senior assignment projects to be presented at the Undergraduate Scholars Showcase. In keeping with the spirit of last year’s event, URCA associates and assistants will be displaying their presentations as well.

Each participant will receive a certificate of achievement and will be honored at a closing reception. This growing event allows students, faculty and community members an opportunity to celebrate learning and our students’ accomplishments.
