Annual Graduate School Spring Symposium Today

The following events will be featured during today's 20th Annual Graduate School Spring Symposium.

Dr. Hernando Ombao, professor and graduate program director of statistics at the University of California, Irvine, will deliver the keynote address, titled "The Contributions of Statistics to Brain Research." Ombao will demonstrate how statistical modeling was used to identify differences in brain activity between healthy subjects and stroke patients.

Dr. Steven Pryor, director of digital initiatives and technologies with SIUE Library & Information Services will host a workshop, titled "Open Access to Research: A Guide to Policies and Resources for SIUE Faculty." The workshop will explore SIUE SPARK, the university’s open access institutional repository.

The Office of Human Resources' Life To GO Series Presents: “Nature’s Invitation” presented by The Watershed Nature Center.

The Watershed Nature Center is home to more than 40 acres of prairie, forest and wetland habitats. The center features paved walking trails, a raised marsh walk and a welcome center. The Watershed is dedicated to providing environmental education, passive recreation, and enjoyment of native habitats for Edwardsville and surrounding communities.

Bring your lunch and your listening ears as Watershed Director of Programming Eve Drueke presents an interactive talk on how exposure to nature effects our ability to relax, heal, focus and learn, as well as ways to use nature to enrich different areas of our everyday lives.

SIUE Relay for Life Carnival for a Cure, April 8

Precision PR and Colleges Against Cancer invite you to the SIUE Relay for Life Carnival for a Cure:

SIUE Relay For Life is trying to make a difference by fundraising for The American Cancer Society. As a University, our goal is $24,000.
 
Five-hundred lives are saved every day because of the progress that has been made against cancer, in part because of people who have supported the American Cancer Society.

The carnival will feature a disc jockey, zumba and other activities for teams to compete in.

School of Pharmacy Offers Free Medication Evaluation Visits

Chris Lynch, professor and director of clinical programs in the SIUE School of Pharmacy, invites faculty, staff or their friends and family to sign up for a free medication evaluation visit.

Lynch, and two senior pharmacy students, will visit the patient in their home or meet with them in Lynch's office in the School of Pharmacy. Lynch can travel anywhere within a 40-mile radius of the campus. He and his students will conduct a thorough interview, review all medications and offer written feedback to the patient and his or her caregivers as needed.

This program is especially beneficial to those taking large numbers of medications each day or who have medicated-related problems. Lynch is a board certified ambulatory care clinical pharmacist with 23 years experience specializing in assisting patients dealing with large numbers of medications.

These services will be provided during the 2nd and 3rd weeks of April, and the 3rd and 4th weeks of May. They are provided as a free public service of the University and the School of Pharmacy.

Microaggressions are common verbal, behavioral and environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile or negative slights to marginalized groups. Perpetrators of microaggressions are often unaware that they engage in such interactions when they interact with minorities. (Sue, et al, Columbia University, Teachers College, 2007)
