University Staff Senate Now Accepting Applications for 2016 Summer Scholarship

The University Staff Senate has established a fund to provide scholarship awards to qualifying SIUE students and is now accepting applications for its Summer Scholarship. The deadline for receipt of the entire typed application packet will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24. Register Now!

To be eligible for consideration for a scholarship award, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be the son, daughter, grandchild, spouse, or civil union partner of a presently employed, or retired Civil Service (excluding non-status) or professional staff employee (excluding appointments of less than 50% and term appointments of less than six months) of SIUE
  • You must meet admissions requirements for undergraduate study at SIUE

The scholarship award will be applied to your university account for the semester. This award will be reported to the Office of Student Financial Aid to be considered in evaluating your overall financial aid package. Should this amount combined with other awards or payments cause a credit balance on your account, a refund check will be mailed to you from the Bursar's Office.

Through the SIUE scholarship management system, all students can browse and apply for more than 450 scholarships available in the various schools, departments and units at SIUE. This system also offers information on various external scholarships available as well.

To begin a scholarship application, follow these steps:
1. Login at siue.academicworks.com/users/sign_in with your e-ID and password.

2. Fill out the general scholarship application. The system will search for scholarships and awards you may be eligible for. For some, you will automatically be entered into the applicant pool and others may require you to answer additional questions.

3. Continue to check the system regularly as new scholarships become available at different times. Also be sure to browse our “external” scholarship list that provides information and direct links to outside scholarship websites.

If you meet the eligibility criteria above, the software will direct you to the Staff Senate Summer Scholarship page. You are responsible for contacting the University Governance Office to ensure your application packet is complete. You will be notified of the decision of the Scholarship Selection Committee.

If you have any questions about the application process, please contact the University Governance Secretary Vicki Kruse at 650-2770, or Norris Manning at 650-3840.

Chancellor Search Advisory Committee Extends its Search

Please note that the following comes from the Chancellor Search Advisory Committee (CSAC):

The SIU Board of Trustees approved Witt/Kieffer as the search firm to assist with the SIUE chancellor search in December 2015. The final paperwork was completed in mid-January 2016, and the CSAC is actively working with the search firm.

Upon the recommendation of the search firm, and the approval of the CSAC, we will continue to accept applications until Tuesday, March 15 (best consideration date), so that we can continue to attract a strong applicant pool. The CSAC will simultaneously continue to evaluate applicants. We plan to select candidates for the first round of “airport interviews” in late March and conduct the first round of interviews in early April.

We will then select the finalists for campus interviews. We plan to complete all campus interviews before the end of the spring semester, so that we can receive input from the SIUE community.

We would like to thank all those who have nominated individuals for the chancellor position or have provided us with feedback through the website, siue.edu/chancellor/search.

We have received several completed applications, and we encourage you to continue to communicate (nominations/feedback) with us through the “Get Involved” section of the Chancellor Search website, chancellor/search/feedback.

Continuous Improvement Conference, March 18

Continuous Improvement Conference: General Education Course Redesign for Success

9 a.m.-Noon
Friday, March 18
Morris University Center Conference Center

SIUE has successfully remained afloat, even growing, despite the Illinois state funding crisis. However, continued challenges threaten our mission of “a student-centered educational community dedicated to communicating, expanding and integrating knowledge.”

Join together with staff, faculty and administrators to see where we are on the map, and how we can navigate the crisis together. Instructors will share course redesign efforts they have already undertaken.

We will discuss an institutional plan for undertaking course redesign projects. Participants will discuss course redesign and how we might work together to improve student success. More details to follow.

The conference is designed for administrators, faculty (tenured, tenure track, instructors and lecturers) and staff.

It is co-sponsored by the Faculty Development Council and the Office of the Provost.

Lori Anderson Receives March Employee Recognition Award

Lori Anderson, departmental info. supervisor for the Office of Admissions, is the recipient of the March Employee Recognition Award. Lori was nominated by Todd Burrell, with support from Jeff Chitwood and Ryan Downey.

Please join us in congratulating Lori Anderson as the Employee of the Month:

3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, March 23
Rendleman Hall Room 2101

You can also send Lori a congratulatory email to landers@siue.edu.

"Lori is an extremely dedicated employee. She goes out of her way to do her job and then some! Lori has seen growth in new students at SIUE, but has also seen growth within the Office of Admissions. She has been part of three physical moves in helping the office expand to better accommodate our visitors and guests. She even has utilized her architecture background to oversee our moves to the various locations and her expertise has helped us to have a space that looks extremely nice, but also meets all that we need to better accommodate our visitors. She has helped with the re-structuring of staff on more than one occasion to better help meet the demands from staffing and the new recruitment efforts. One of her biggest strengths is her handling of our office budget. This challenging task, especially in light of the many issues over the years with budget changes, has been handled with such ease. I highly recommend Lori Anderson for the honor of Employee of the Month. She is extremely deserving and her passion and commitment to SIUE and the Office of Admissions over the more than 20 years she has been on campus has been incredibly impactful."
- Todd Burell, director of undergraduate admissions

"Thank you for selecting me as SIUE’s March Employee of the Month! I am honored and surprised by the selection. I would like to thank Todd Burrell for nominating me, along with Jeff Chitwood, Ryan Downey and everyone else who supported the nomination. The Office of Admissions has been my home at SIUE since I began 22 years ago. I have never considered another office on campus because I enjoy coming to work and meeting the ever-changing challenges of higher education admission, especially assisting prospective freshmen and their parents with the task of narrowing the choices. SIUE and the Office of Admissions continue to thrive thanks to dedicated, caring and supportive team members. I am happy to call SIUE my home away from home."
- Lori Anderson, Office of Admissions
