International Migration will be presented by Sophia Wilson, PhD, Shklar Research Fellow, Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, and assistant professor in political science. As record numbers of migrants seek refuge in Europe, the continent is struggling for an adequate response. World powers now face difficult questions of how to balance border security with humanitarian concerns. More importantly, what can be done to resolve this crisis that is displacing so many?

Take Time to Write is presented by Donna Volkenannt, writer, published author and winner of the Erma Bombeck Global Humor Award. Volkenannt will share her personal writing journey to publication, read a short story example of her award winning writing, and teach us some basic writing exercises designed to help us each begin to write our own stories.

Enjoy African Week

Faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in African Week activities through Feb. 20.

This year's theme is “KADIMA 2016: Together We Move Forward Africa.” Kadima is a South African word, with Hebrew origin, that means “forward.”

During the week, activities and conversations planned are designed to change the perspective of Africa, to promote personal, community and African development and to ensure collaboration among Africans and African Americans.

Announcing the Spring 2016 Diversity Film Series, Next One Today

The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion is sponsoring a diversity film series open to the entire University community.

This semester’s series includes a four-part film entitled: The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow, as well as other films including Memory of a Forgotten WarFreedom on My Mind, and a presentation on Strategies for Serving and Supporting Transgender Students. These films will encompass many topics of diversity and inclusion.

The film series is open to faculty, staff and students, with a maximum attendance of 25 people at each session.

SEHHB Fundraiser at Edison's Today

A fundraiser for the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior will be held today.

Edison’s Entertainment Complex will donate 10 percent of food and beverage sales and 20 percent of entertainment purchases to the SEHHB.

Please stop by Edison’s with the whole family at 5 p.m. to enjoy food, beverages and entertainment. All you will need to do is let them know you are with the SIUE.

Proof Play Opens on Stage Today

Come out to see the play, Proof, written by David Auburn, winner of the 2001 Pultizer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play. The play is also directed by Peter Cocuzza, professor in the Department of Theater and Dance.

SIUE Summer Showbiz is holding auditions for the 2016 professional Summer Stock Season.

All ethnicities, ages and genders are encouraged to attend.

Open to non-Union, and paid positions are available. Casting in multiple productions is possible.

SIUE Police Presents Self Defense Class, Feb. 27

The SIUE Police Department is presenting a one-day, free of charge, self-defense course: Rape, Aggression, Defense (R.A.D.) Systems. The course is offered for WOMEN ONLY (faculty, staff, students and their guests).

R.A.D. is a nationally certified self-defense program designed specifically for women.  We will spend the day teaching you different techniques on how to defend yourself. At the end of the day, we put an officer in a padded suit and allow the students to use the skills taught to defend themselves.  

Appropriate clothing would be tennis shoes, T-shirt with sweat pants or shorts. Bring money for lunch options in the MUC or bring a sack lunch.

Phi Kappa Phi Student Opportunities, Deadline March 21

Several great opportunities for our students are available through our local chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. Please note that membership in PKP is NOT required for two of the three. 

Undergraduate Scholarship: One scholarship of up to $1,000 (which must be applied to undergraduate or graduate tuition and fees at SIUE) may be awarded. Eligibility requirements: must be an undergraduate with at least junior standing (60 hours) at the end of the fall semester 2015, must have a minimum GPA of 3.5, and must have earned at least 24 semester hours at SIUE by the end of the fall semester 2015. Students with a 100 percent waiver for tuition and fees are not eligible. Please note: Applicants DO NOT have to be PKP members.
The deadline is 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 21.

Undergraduate Paper Contest: Three cash prizes will be awarded for papers meeting the criteria. Submissions are to be scholarly essays or research papers on any academic topic that can be understood by a lay audience. This contest is open to ANY SIUE undergraduate.

Graduate Fellowship: Graduating seniors with superior academic and leadership records, who are or will be members of Phi Kappa Phi by the application deadline, and who have applied to enroll as a full-time student in a post-baccalaureate program of study for the 2016-2017 academic year are eligible to apply. One fellowship award of up to $1,000 will be given through our local chapter and then this person will be entered into the national contest where 51 fellowships of $5,000 and six fellowships of $15,000 will be awarded (SIUE nominee Luke Settles won a national award last year).
