SIUE SCC- Alton Partnership Updates

Alton Mayor Walker shaking hands with Professor Connie Frey-Spurlock. Provost Cobb is also present.

The SIUE Successfull Communities Collaborative (SSCC) is halfway through our partnership with the City of Alton. The partnership, which spans the 2018-2019 school year, is being driven by Alton's strategic plan. During the fall semester, the partnership involved three academic courses that engaged students on six different city projects which included developing a marketing strategy as a means of boosting tourism and economic development, evaluating best practices for business incubation and small business start-up initiatives, and development of system requirements for a mobile app that will highlight upcoming events and tourist attractions within the city.  SIUE Public Relations students, furthermore, created an internal marketing plan for the collaborative to increase visibility among campus stakeholders. This same group of students is planning a wrap-up event in April 2019 to celebrate a successful end to the partnership year.

During the Spring 2019 semester, 3 groups of students will be tackling issues in Alton. A civil engineering class will work with engineers at Sheparrd, Morgan & Schwaab to generate an alternative intersection design, produce curb ramp designs and develop a stormwater management plan. In addition, sociology students will be researching perceived barriers to starting a business in Alton, Illinois, and will do so through interviews and an online survey of community members. The City of Alton will use the data to determine needs and to guide future outreach efforts. Lastly, over the course of the next two semesters, a computer science project team will develop an app containing information about local events and businesses.

LERN International Award

Adriana E. Martinez, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Geography, is the instructor for the FAA Remote Pilot Certification course. Martinez talks to students in the fall course (L-R) Mingshao Zhang, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; and Donald Anderson, engineering draftsman II; and John Renken, architect II, both in Facilities Management.

SIUE Educational Outreach received the 2018 The Learning Resources Network (LERN) International Award for Excellence in Programming for its FAA Remote Pilot Certification course, taught by Adriana E. Martinez, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Geography. The LERN presented the award to Leslie Brock, assistant director of non-credit programs for the Office of Educational Outreach, during its annual conference held Nov. 8 in Savannah, Ga.

SIUE was one of only four organizations to win for best programming, and LERN gave out 20 awards at the conference. “The best programming awards were given to programs that are creative, innovative or exemplary,” said Brock. “This is the first year that we’ve submitted anything for an award. Mary Ettling (interim director of Educational Outreach) suggested that we submit our application, and we were all extremely excited to learn that we won.”

“Some advantages of the program are that it brings the campus together with the community, and allows the Educational Outreach office to highlight the amazing faculty, facilities and research occurring at SIUE,” continued Brock. “This course provides a service that has been lacking, allowing the faculty to conduct their research to the fullest advantage.”

The course prepares students for the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate exam. Those who are paid to conduct commercial flights must pass the exam in order to be certified to fly. The course covers exam materials, including airspace classifications, general rules and procedures, reading aviation maps and other aeronautical knowledge, according to Martinez.

Martinez and Brock designed and coordinated the certification program, which had 22 students this fall.

For the past two decades, Professor H. Felix Lee in Industrial Engineering at SIUE has been offering continuous education courses to Boeing engineers on 3D computer-aided design, manufacturing and analysis using Unigraphics NX and CATIA. Boeing is a global leading industry in aerospace in which these courses help Boeing engineers to design and manufacture their products with higher quality and productivity.

Currently Professor Lee is offering UG NX11 Intro: Introduction to Solid and Assembly Modeling:

Subjects covered include: Geometric Modeling Techniques, Solid Modeling, Parametric & Associative Modeling, Various Visualization & Model Interrogation Methods, Measurements, UG User Interface Management, Boolean Operations of Solid Models, Primitives and Form Features, Edge and Face Operations, Swept Features & Other Features, Datum Reference Features, Sketching, Intro Assembly Modeling & Assembly Constraints, and Industry Applications
Projects: A highlight of student projects is to build a complete toy radio controlled car. This requires students to build and interrogate 3-D models for components of the car with various geometric shapes and to assemble them into the final car assembly. This project consists of 13 mini-projects toward the completion of the toy car assembly. In order to complete these, students have to understand lecture materials covered in class and apply them properly. In addition, students will practice lecture materials with various hands-on design and assembly projects.
