James Haas, 1928-2020; Was CAS Faculty
James Martin Haas, of Pullman Washington, died of cancer on Wednesday, March 18 at the Memory Villas at Bishop Place. The SIUE Emeritus Professor of Historical Studies was 92.
A Milwaukee, Wisconsin native, Haas joined the SIUE faculty in 1961 and taught British and early modern European history until he retired in 1995. His study “A Management Odyssey: The Royal Dockyards, 1714-1914” (1994) included exhaustive research in the United Kingdom National Archives and the Sessional Papers of the House of Commons. It was adopted as readings for seminars at Exeter and Portsmouth Universities in the U.K. His passion for history never waned as he published his last academic article at the age of 89.
Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is managing the arrangements, which are yet to be set.
