Ted Frisbie, 1937-2020; Was CAS Faculty
Theodore “Ted” Frisbie, of Edwardsville, passed away Monday, Feb. 24 at his residence. He was 82.
A New York City native, Frisbie joined SIUE in 1972 as a professor of anthropology and served until his retirement in 1997, when he became professor emeritus. During his tenure, he was a chairperson for the anthropology department from 1979-81.
Frisbie received an Outstanding Performance Award for developing and building the Anthropology Department Teaching Museum in 1979. He served as the museum’s director from 1979-97. The museum was chosen as one of 10 places to be visited on campus by prospective students. He also started Teaching Museum Research Reports in 1985.
A beloved teacher who loved working with and mentoring students, Frisbie was an undergraduate advisor for the anthropology department, and advisor to TRIBE, SONAR and the Anthropology Club. He was awarded the SIUE Teaching Excellence Award 1992-93. He received the SIUE Excellence in Undergraduate Education Awards for excavations and restorations at Zuni in 1989, 1991, 1993, and at the Love Farm in 1996.
Frisbie donated his body to the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. No services will be held. Later this summer, the family will plan a gathering to celebrate his life with relatives and close friends.
