SIUE Announces Next School of Engineering Dean; Liang Cheng, PhD, Takes the Helm August 19
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is pleased to announce the appointment of Liang Cheng, PhD, as the next Dean of the School of Engineering, effective August 19. Dr. Cheng will also hold an academic appointment as Professor of Computer Science with a courtesy appointment in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Cheng joins SIUE from the University of Toledo, where he has served as Department Chair and Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He previously served as a faculty member in Computer Science and Engineering at Lehigh University. As an accomplished scholar and leader, he brings a wealth of experience in developing academic programs, building strategic initiatives, and advancing research in cyber-physical systems and artificial intelligence. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and a successful track record of securing extramural funding.
Cheng received enthusiastic support from the university community during the search process. As SIUE continues to distinguish and grow the School of Engineering and its regional and national impact, his forward-thinking leadership will play a vital role in achieving the university’s strategic priorities and elevating academic excellence.

SIUE congratulates Cem Karacal, PhD, who now holds the title of Dean Emeritus after 33 years in the School of Engineering as a faculty member, Associate Dean, and Dean.
