Continuous Recruitment Graduate Assistantship (1116-2022)


Applicants admitted or enrolled in the SIUe Biological Sciences graduate program are preferred, applicants in other graduate programs with allied prior coursework or academic backgrounds are considered. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is preferred, but exceptions may be considered for demonstrated specialized relevant knowledge. Most assistantships are teaching positions, and competencies for communication in English will be evaluated with an interview. Availability at the times of class meetings and for other course preparation will be required and assessed with candidates as positions become available. If hired, applicants will be provided laboratory safety training and are expected to comply with applicable safety policies of the department and university.

Position Description

A graduate assistant in Biological Sciences may perform a subset of the following duties, and possibly others not specified: face-to-face laboratory instruction for laboratory classes, preparation and cleaning of the laboratory spaces and equipment, preparation of reagents, accompanying or instructing classes in outdoor settings, grading, meeting with students for additional instruction in person and/or online, supervising open labs, attending TA meetings and lead-off labs, holding office hours, proctoring exams, supporting faculty lecture exercises, and greenhouse plant or animal care associated with teaching. It is possible not all duties will be performed during regular business hours because Biological Sciences offers some evening classes or has ongoing lab preparation and specimen maintenance throughout the week including on weekends.

Required Documents

 If not admitted or enrolled in the Biological Sciences Graduate program, submit transcripts (official or unofficial) that show relevant biology-related coursework, and a short narrative of no more than one page (PDF) that indicates the subdisciplines of biology that the applicant has competencies to teach (e.g., anatomy, ecology, genetics, etc.)
