Curriculum
When taken separately, there are 154 credit hours in the PharmD program and 36 credit hours in the MSPS program for a total of 190 credit hours. Students in the concurrent program take 145 credit hours in the PharmD program and 24 credit hours in the MBA program for a total of 169 credit hours.
MBA Degree Requirements
The concurrent degree student will take 24 credits of required MBA courses. In addition to these 24 hours of required courses, the MBA requires 12 hours of elective credits. Students will meet these MBA elective requirements with the following required PharmD courses:
- PHAS 708 Health Care Systems (3 hours)
- PHAS 709 Health Care and Financial Management (2 hours)
- PHAS 728N Pharmacy Management I (2 hours)
- PHAS 733N Pharmacy Law (2 hours)
- PHAS 754 Pharmacy Management II (2 hours)
- PHAS 756 Pharmacy and Population Health (2 hours)
Students are encouraged to take PHEP 784, Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience – Leadership Elective, to enhance their learning.
The required MBA courses include ACCT 524, MKTG 525, CMIS 526, FIN 527, MBA 521, MBA 522, ECON 528, and MBA 534.
PharmD Degree Requirements
The School of Pharmacy will accept the following required MBA courses as external electives towards the elective requirement of the PharmD program:
- MBA 522 Decision Making (3 hours)
- MKTG 525 Marketing Analysis & Applications (3 hours)
- MBA 534 Strategic Management (3 hours)
In addition, students have the option to take an SOP approved elective, an independent study, MBA 523 Negotiation & Interpersonal Skills (3 hours), or PROD 529 Operations Management (3 hours) in order to fulfill the 10 credit hours of elective requirement for the PharmD program.
Progression and Retention
The students accepted into the concurrent program will need to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or greater for the graduate courses. In addition, students must satisfy a comprehensive examination requirement by earning a grade of B or above in MBA 534.
Students placed on pharmacy academic probation will be required to pause their concurrent degree studies until they successfully remediate pharmacy courses and return to non-probation status.
Students who fail to meet the master's progression criteria must meet with the master's program director to discuss a retention and remediation plan. The School of Pharmacy will also be involved in the discussion of the progression status of the concurrent degree studies. Based on the timeline, students may be unable to complete the concurrent degree.
