of parent(s) during the
American Revolution." years 1670 through 1796. After you
read, reflect on the mortality rate during that time due to
disease epidemics.

After you read, reflect on the death not only from battle but
due to injury such as gangrene. Also consider parents
that were maimed or crippled and can no
longer provide for
a family.
2. Role of the church and relief funds
a. The Anglican church as the largest in
Charleston but what about other Churches? What prompted them
to withdraw from taking care of the orphans?

173. As you read, determine the role of the church and

orphanages. What was the
rationale that the Charleston City Council took to build an
orphanage rather than fund the orphans from public relief?
What institution did they examine that they modeled their decision
upon?
3. Ordinance. Go

Charleston Orphan House? Was it for true orphans?
What provisions did the city provide for
them?
