Research Integrity & Authorship Decisions

The Graduate School Office of Research & Projects did a series last month highlighting SIUE’s newly published Authorship Policy 1M12 and Authorship Checklist. SIUE published the new Authorship Policy on December 23, 2020 as an additional resource to ensure Research Integrity, fair and appropriate authorship attribution, and to reduce the risk of authorship disputes arising. The Authorship Checklist was published as an additional resource to the policy to help manage pro-active conversations around authorship and provide a more tangible framework for what a “substantial intellectual contribution” is.

The articles focused on the elements of the new policy and checklist. You can find both of the articles on the ORP News Webpage. You can also read the full policy here or download the checklist off the Graduate School Forms page.

Engage & Lead

Campus Leadership Opportunities for Graduate Students

Leadership development is a critical component of one’s collegiate experience. Through leadership programs and leadership-adjacent programs, students can be change agents, influencers, managers, and collaborators while on-campus and beyond. The Kimmel Student Involvement Center provides many opportunities for graduate students to engage with and practice leadership such as:

  • LEAD Program: A customizable, self-paced program that focuses on a variety of leadership elements. Upon completion, students will have a portfolio of professional experiences and a medal to wear at commencement.
  • Free weekly Leadership Lunches
  • Monthly Roundtables
  • LeaderShape: A four-day, immersive program that challenges participants to lead with integrity while working towards a vision grounded in their deepest values. Applications close March 6th!
  • Legacy: A year-long leadership experience for advanced student leaders. Components of this program will include a group capstone project, individual manifesto and leadership development plan, and biweekly meetings on advanced leadership topics.

Upcoming events can be found on GetInvolved (https://getinvolved.siue.edu/organization/sldp) and on Instagram (@siueLEAD). Feel free to reach out with questions at leadership@siue.edu.

Meet Aldara Henderson, Master of Public Health student

Aldara Henderson's research interest in the preparedness and resiliency among cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic is rooted in a deeply personal experience.  In 2016, working as a stay-at-home mother of five children, Aldara received crushing news: a diagnosis of stage four cancer with only four months to live.  In the following months she endured several rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and multiple surgeries.

After beating the odds and becoming inspired by her health journey, Aldara decided to pursue SIUE's graduate program in public health.  As a member of the inaugural cohort of the MPH program, she has excelled inside and outside of the classroom.  Her passion for public health has propelled her research engagement, including a grant submission to create an online database of resources for young adult cancer patients and working with her faculty and peers to submit a NIH grant on malaria prevention. Following graduation this spring, Aldara intends to continue her education in a doctoral program in public health as she strives to make an impact on global health initiatives.
